BALTIMORE, MD. – The Raiders bounced back strong from their loss yesterday afternoon, sweeping Patriot League foe Loyola (25-9, 25-11, 26-24).
With the win, Colgate is moves to 9-0 in series history against the Greyhounds.
The Raiders got off to a quick start in the first frame, defeating Loyola 25-9. Colgate started the set on a 6-0 run behind two kills by
Katie Stansbury and two blocks by
Jaelah Hutchison and
Katie Stebbins. The Greyhounds could not stop Colgate's momentum as the team continued their hot streak to take a 12-4 lead before a Loyola timeout. The Raiders increased their lead after the timeout, gaining an 18-7 advantage behind two kills by
Lauren Sanderson. Freshmen
Michala Jepson added her name to the box score with a kill, then recorded a block assist with Hutchison to give the Raiders a 20-7 lead. Colgate closed out the game with a kill by
Noel Kennebeck. Colgate racked up 15 kills in the frame, with Harris and Stansbury each pitching in four of their own.
Colgate started hot in the second set, topping Loyola 25-11. The Raiders got off to a 5-0 lead after two Stansbury service aces. Colgate continued the momentum thanks to two more kills by Stebbins, pushing its lead to 13-6 before a timeout by the Greyhounds. Coming out of the timeout,
Taylor Flaherty registered back-to-back service aces to take a 15-6 lead over Loyola. After extending the lead to 18-7, the Greyhounds were forced to use their final timeout of the set. Loyola seemed to be gaining a bit of ground after the timeout, but a kill by Harris and Hutchison, along with a Loyola attack error, gave the Raiders the 22-9 advantage over the Greyhounds. Stansbury continued her service run with an ace to extend the lead to 23-9 and a block by Jepson and Flaherty closed out the frame, 25-11. Stebbins and Hutchison each notched three kills in the frame.
The third set looked very different than the first two for the Raiders, but they were able to fight their way out of a hole to win the set 26-24. The frame was a battle through the first 10 points, with teams exchanging points. Colgate used a 3-0 run to take a 12-10 lead over the Greyhounds, but it would not hold for long, with Loyola using a run of its own to tie the set at 15. The Raiders continued to push, taking an 18-6 lead after a Loyola timeout, but once again Loyola caught up and it was a back-and-forth battle for the final points of the frame. Colgate found itself down 23-22, but Hutchison came through with a kill to tie the set at 23. Stebbins recorded a huge solo block at the net to take a 24-23 over the Greyhounds, pulling the momentum onto the side of Colgate. After a Loyola timeout, the team tied the frame at 24, but a service error gave the Raiders a 25-24 lead and Colgate closed out the frame with a block by Harris and Flaherty.
Stansbury notched nine kills and a team-high 18 digs, while Harris lead the Raider offense with 10 kills.
The Raiders are back in action tomorrow as they travel to take on Bucknell at 2:00 p.m. to finish out the long weekend.
