WASHINGTON, D.C. – American came out firing and Colgate just could not surpass the unbeaten Eagles, falling in three sets (18-25, 23-25, 20-25).
American took the early lead in the first set and would not look back, taking the frame 25-18. The Eagles took a 12-6 advantage over the Raiders thanks to seven errors by Colgate. The Raiders got the deficit to five points at 16-11 after
Kathleen Harris and
Jaelah Hutchison recorded a block at the net. A service ace by
Molly Smith put Colgate within four points at 16-12, but that was as close as the Raiders would get for the rest of the way. Harris and Hutchison each contributed four kills in the frame.
Colgate got out to a quick start in the second set, but could not hold on the lead, falling 25-23. The Raiders started the frame off on an 8-1 run behind a five point service run by
Peighton McRobie. The Eagles started chipping away at the Colgate lead and took their first lead of the set at 20-19. The Raiders battled to tie the game back at 20, but American would capitalize on three Colgate errors in the final five points to close out the set.
Katie Stansbury recorded three kills in the frame.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle for a majority of the way, but once again, American used three Colgate errors to take a 14-12 lead over the Raiders. Colgate would get the score to within one point at 15-14, but would not come closer than three points for the rest of the set. American closed out the final frame with four kills.
The Raiders are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Loyola to take on the Greyhounds at 2:00 p.m.
