BOSTON – A pair of goals from Colgate men's soccer senior
Zach Pagani guided the Raiders to their first-ever win over Boston University Wednesday evening as Colgate earned a 2-1 Patriot League road victory at Nickerson Field.
Pagani gave the Raiders an early lead in the 26th minute before BU evened the score 12 minutes later. The Ann Arbor, Mich. native then scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute to cement the 2-1 victory.
The Terriers controlled possession for much of the opening 20 minutes of play, but Colgate's strong defensive play limited BU to just one shot during that time. The Raiders were able to quickly counter and take an early lead in the 26th minute when sophomore
Oliver Harris sent a centering pass to classmate
Freddy Jonsson who flicked the ball past a BU defender and to the feet of Pagani. Pagani quickly slid the ball into the right-hand side of the net to put the Raiders up 1-0.
The Raiders controlled momentum until the Terriers found an equalizer in the 38th minute. Matt McDonnell headed in a cross from Adam Wright to knot the game at 1-1, a score that would carry into halftime.
Colgate rattled off three corner kicks and a pair of shots in the first five minutes of the second half. Pagani then added his second goal of the game in the 62nd minute when he dribbled his way around the BU defense and struck the ball into the far post to put the Raiders back in front, 2-1.
Colgate senior keeper
Ricky Brown was forced to make his only save of the game two minutes later to preserve the Raider lead. The Colgate defense stood strong the rest of the way, allowing only three BU shots in the final 25 minutes of action to lock up the 2-1 victory.
