Bethlehem, Pa. – Colgate collected its second sweep of Lehigh this season, defeating the Mountain Hawks 25-17, 25-17, 25-22.
With the win, Colgate moves to 10-2 in Patriot League play and holds on to sole possession of second place with just four matches to go.
The Raiders got out to an early 6-1 lead over Lehigh and did not look back, topping the Mountain Hawks 25-17 in the first set. Junior
Molly Smith started off the frame with two service aces and Colgate took advantage of two Lehigh setting errors to go ahead. The Raiders continued to keep the Mountain Hawks at a four to five-point deficit thanks to 15 total kills by Colgate in the frame. Senior
Kathleen Harris recorded five kills of her own in the set to lead the Raiders to a 1-0 advantage.
The second set looked very similar to the first for both teams as Colgate defeated the Mountain Hawks 25-17. Once again the Raiders jumped out to an early lead over Lehigh, taking an 8-4 advantage thanks to four Lehigh errors. The Mountain Hawks battled back though and Colgate found itself with its first deficit of the match at 9-8. After a Colgate timeout, freshman
Taylor Flaherty tied the game with a huge kill and swung the momentum back in the Raiders' favor. Colgate went on a 9-5 run to take an 18-14 lead, which looked like it would hold, but once again, Lehigh battled to within two points at 18-16. Colgate used its final timeout and went on an 8-4 run to close out the frame.
Katie Stebbins and
Katie Stansbury led the way with three kills apiece in the second frame.
Colgate found itself in an early hole against the Mountain Hawks in the third set, but were able to battle back and take the frame 25-22. The Raiders were down 5-1 to start the final set, but Harris pulled the team to within one at 5-4 after recording two kills. The teams were trading points but Colgate went ahead for good at 16-15 after a bad set from Lehigh. Over the last nine points for the Raiders, they were able to capitalize on three kills by sophomore
Jaelah Hutchison and five Mountain Hawk errors to put the match away.
The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday as they take on Bucknell at Cotterell Court at 7:00 p.m.
