Annapolis, Md. – After a long battle, Colgate was able to top Navy in five sets on Friday night (16-25, 25-19, 25-27, 29-27, 16-14). The Raiders hold on to second place in the Patriot League with the win.
Senior
Kathleen Harris led the Raiders with 21 kills and a career-best 23 digs to help Colgate to a 2-0 record against Navy this season.
Navy got out to an early 7-1 lead over Colgate and the Raiders could just not find their way out of the hole, falling 25-16 in the first frame. Colgate went on a mini-run to lessen its deficit to just three points at 7-4, thanks to a kill apiece from Harris,
Jaelah Hutchison and
Corrina Moncada, but that was the closest the team would get for the rest of the set. The Mids hit .306 in the frame and capitalized on 11 Colgate errors to take the set. Harris led the way with three kills in the frame and
Lauren Sanderson and
Jaelah Hutchison each pitched in two.
The Raiders fell down early in the second set once again, but fought back to top the Mids 25-19 in the frame. Colgate evened the set at seven and then went on a 11-6 run to take the momentum and an 18-13 advantage over Navy. During the run, Harris recorded three kills and the Raiders took advantage of five Navy errors. Navy fought back though, getting the frame within five points at 24-19. Colgate closed out the set and even the match at 1-1 with a kill by Harris, who finished with seven in the frame.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, but Navy defeated the Raiders 27-25. Colgate found itself in a seven-point deficit at 22-15, but fought back to tie the frame at 22 apiece. Hutchison recorded three kills during the run to help even the frame. The teams then traded points until the Mids closed out the set with two straight kills from Tara Dotzauer. Hutchison registered five kills in the frame to lead the way.
Colgate fought hard in the fourth set, topping Navy 29-27 to even the match at two sets apiece. The Raiders led the frame 14-7 thanks to seven kills by the squad. The Mids battled their way back into the set tying the frame at 16-16. Colgate went on a 5-3 run thanks two kills by
Katie Stebbins to give the Raiders the 21-19 advantage. Navy tied the frame back up at 22 apiece and the teams then traded points until
Taylor Flaherty and
Katie Stansbury each recorded a kill to close out the set at 29-27.
Similar to the last two sets, neither team had a lead larger than three points but Colgate was able to hold on to defeat Navy 16-14 in the final set and win the match. Down 14-13, Harris registered a huge kill to tie the game at 14 and then a Hutchison kill gave the Raiders the 15-14 lead. Stebbins then came up with a huge solo block to take home the frame 16-14.
The Raiders are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Bethlehem, Pa. to take on Lehigh at 4:00 p.m. Colgate won the last match on Oct. 1 in straight sets.

From the Source Ryan Baker
- "These are one of those matches where you just sit back and watch with a smile. Both teams battled really hard and it could have gone either way. It was an incredible road win. We beat a Navy team that is playing very well and was very energized, especially with it being senior night."
- "We started off slow and made some unusual errors, but we responded which is what we preach everyday. Jaelah and Kat had huge matches for us and Madison settled the pass game for us. It was a total team win. The sideline provided huge energy and I believe they earned us the win."
