HAMILTON –
Colgate men's soccer senior Ethan Kutler scored a game-tying goal with 50 seconds left in regulation to send Wednesday's game against Army to overtime, but the Black Knights booted in the game-winner with 44 seconds remaining in double overtime to hand the Raiders a tough 2-1 loss at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Army broke a scoreless draw in the 84th minute, but Kutler followed with an impressive goal off a free kick to force overtime. Colgate controlled much of the momentum in the extra time, but Army's Zac McGraw scored off a corner kick in the 110th minute to lift the Black Knights to the 2-1 win.

The Raiders tallied three shots in the opening five minutes, including an attempt from junior Jared Stroud that flew just inches wide. The Black Knights quickly countered with a blocked shot that was followed by a missile from Rex Epps that bounced off the post. Colgate senior keeper Ricky Brown was forced two make two saves in the opening half as the teams exchanged possession for a majority of the term and took a scoreless draw into halftime.

Senior Colin O'Neill had a glittering chance in the 59th minute, but his shot nipped the foot of an Army defender and flew out of bounds. Classmate Ethan Kutler worked his way around the Colgate defense a few minutes later, but a touch took the ball too close to the goal line and his attempt flew into the side netting. The Raiders continued to generate chances, but it was Army that was able to convert first.

The Black Knights scored in the 84th minute when a Colgate foul led to a free kick right next to the corner flag. The kick from Marcos Arroyo found the head of McGraw who sent the ball to Nick Williams. Williams snuck it into the corner of the net to put Army up 1-0.

Colgate didn't give up, however, as the Raiders pressured Army with four shots and three corner kicks in the next few minutes until Colgate was awarded a free kick with 50 seconds left in regulation. Kutler stepped up to take the kick about 30 yards out and sent it over the defensive wall and into the right-side netting to tie the game at 1-1 before the contest went to overtime.

A Kutler attempt skidded wide to open the first extra frame. Army keeper Justin Stoll snagged an impressive bicycle kick shot from first-year Christian Clarke to keep the Black Knights alive. The Army defense blocked a pair of Colgate shots that nearly ended the game in the 98th minute as the Raiders wrapped up the first overtime with an 8-1 shot advantage, but the contest carried into double overtime.

The second overtime period was much more subdued as neither team got off a shot until the 108th minute. The Black Knights earned a corner kick in the final minute of action as McGraw was able to collect the ball after a scramble in front of the net and send it past Brown to lead Army to the 2-1 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Erik Ronning
  • "We gave a very good effort tonight. We gave away a couple goals on set pieces. It was a tight game and it was going to come down to one play. Their goalie played great and they cleared a couple off the line that could've made the outcome much different, but that's soccer sometimes."
  • "It's our hope that we can pick up the pieces and respond positively. We put a great effort out there tonight and created a lot of quality goal scoring opportunities. We'll learn from it and move forward."
  • "I'm not disappointed with the effort at all. Obviously disappointed with the result, but not the effort. Our guys gave it their all and played some great soccer at times. What's important is that we recover and respond.
