BALTIMORE – Loyola scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 16th minute to capture a 1-0 win over Colgate Sunday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Raiders threatened early as senior
Ethan Kutler was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box, but his shot, as well as the rebound, were blocked by the Greyhound defense. Loyola got on the board in the 16th minute when Josh Fawole beat out a Colgate defender on a long run and sent the ball just past the fingertips of a diving
Ricky Brown to give the Greyhounds an early 1-0 lead.
Brown came up with a pair of big saves in the next five minutes as the Raiders kept Loyola from adding to its lead. Colgate picked up the pace a bit with two shots and a corner kick over a ten-minute span late in the opening term, but the Raiders weren't able to find an equalizer as Loyola took its 1-0 advantage into halftime.
A Colgate corner kick and shot from sophomore
Uyi Omorogbe opened the second half, but Loyola keeper Matt Sanchez was there the make the save. The Raiders kept the pressure up and rattled off three shots over the next 10 minutes. The Colgate defense stood strong to prevent the Greyhounds from adding to their lead. A shot from first-year
Kentaro Morrison and a pair of attempts from senior
Zach Pagani gave Colgate chances in the final few minutes, but Loyola was able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
