Raiders earn 1-0 shutout over Navy on Senior Day

Head Coach Erik Ronning captures 100th career win

HAMILTON – The Colgate men's soccer team earned its second-straight shutout and eighth clean sheet of the season with a 1-0 victory over Navy on Senior Day Saturday at a cold, rain-soaked Beyer-Small '76 Field. The win is Colgate's 10th of the season and the Raiders have now secured back-to-back 10-win seasons for the first time since 1991-92.

The 1-0 victory over Navy also marked head coach Erik Ronning's 100th career win. All of Ronning's victories have come during his tenure at Colgate as he's compiled a 100-85-39 record in his 13 seasons as head coach.

Sophomore Aram Ouligian scored the game-winner in the 38th minute. Senior keeper Ricky Brown made four saves in goal to claim his seventh clean sheet of the season.

Brown and fellow seniors Colin O'Neill, Ethan Kutler, Zach Tamen, Zach Pagani, Charlie Vallee and Nick Le were honored prior to the game on Senior Day.

The Raiders got off four shots in the opening 10 minutes with the best early opportunity coming from Vallee, but his attempt skidded just wide in the seventh minute. Brown made a pair of saves in the next ten minutes before the Raiders picked up pace once again.

A corner kick from junior Jared Stroud in the 38th minute led to a flurry in front of the net. A Tamen header found the foot of Ouligian who rifled the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net to put the Raiders ahead 1-0. Colgate sent in three more shots in the opening term before the Raiders carried their 1-0 lead into halftime.

Colgate picked up where it left off in the second half as a sliding attempt from sophomore Uyi Omorogbe missed wide by just inches three minutes into the second stanza. Navy keeper Mac Burke was got his fingertips on an attempt from Pagani in the 72nd minute to barely keep the Raiders from doubling their lead. Colgate withstood a pair of Navy shots in the final five minutes to secure the 1-0 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Erik Ronning
  • "There were difficult conditions today and Navy is a very tough team. As the game wore on, we started to find a bit of rhythm and it led to getting a corner kick and scoring a goal. We knew it was going to be a tightly-contested game, as are all Patriot League games, and we're really happy to get one step closer to where we want to be."
  • "We showed flashes of brilliance and flashes that we need to improve. This group constantly overachieves and constantly gets better. We've had our ups, we've had our downs and we've shown some resolve. We just have to focus on the process and keep getting better."
  • "This senior class has gone through a lot from start to finish. They've weathered some difficult times and the fact that they're here today with two 10-win seasons in a row is a testament to their leadership, hard work, talent, and character. These are high-character kids that mean so much to this program. We are where we are today because of that group of seven guys."
  • "They've stayed true to the process and have believed in what Colgate Soccer is all about. Because of the example that they have set, our program will continue to have success moving forward. What's more rewarding and important is seeing the men they've developed into. They came here as young men and now they're leaving as mature adults."
  • "They're going to be highly successful later in life and I couldn't be more proud of how far they've come in three and a half years. They're a really special group. That win today is for them and they deserve it."
