HAMILTON – An offensive outburst and dominant full-game effort led the Colgate women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Army West Point in a key Patriot League battle at Beyer-Small '76 Field Wednesday evening.
Colgate got out to a 3-0 lead in the first half and never looked back. Senior
Sarah Coy put the Raiders on the board in the 20th minute and followed with a second goal in the second half. Senior
Sophi Lederer, first-year
Mara Cosentino and sophomore
Shannon Pawlak also chipped in goals.
The Raiders finished the game with a 25-3 shot advantage and recorded their second shutout of the season.
The Raiders controlled the momentum right from the start, ripping seven shots in the opening eight minutes. Two of those opportunities were one-on-one with Army keeper Jordan Cassalia as Cosentino and Lederer both had their shots knocked off the line to keep the game scoreless.
Coy was able to convert in the 20th minute when she found a pass from first-year
Abby Sotomayor and buried it into the far post to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders doubled their lead eight minutes lead as Coy had a breakaway run and was taken down in the box by the Army keeper. Lederer then converted the penalty kick to put Colgate ahead 2-0 in the 28th minute. Cosentino followed in the 41st minute as she poked a pass from sophomore
Nicole Gavin past Cassalia to make it 3-0 Colgate. The Raiders took that lead, as well as a 16-1 shot advantage, into halftime.
It continued to be all Colgate in the second half as Coy was able to add to the Raider lead in the 53rd minute. A pass from sophomore
Jayne Maccio found Coy at the top of the 18-yard box and the Boca Raton, Fla. native rifled it off the underneath of the crossbar and into the back of the net to stretch Colgate's lead to 4-0.
The final Colgate goal of the night came in the 86th minute when another Army foul in the box led to Colgate's second penalty kick of the night. This time, Pawlak converted the attempt to notch her first career goal and secure a 5-0 Raider victory.
