Raiders Drop 4-3 Double Overtime Battle to Navy on Senior Day

Six Colgate Seniors Honored Prior to Kickoff

HAMILTON – The Colgate women's soccer team held a 3-1 lead heading into the final ten minutes of regulation against Navy, but the Mids scored two late goals before finding a game-winner in double overtime to earn a 4-3 victory Saturday night at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Colgate six-member senior class of Sarah Coy, Sophi Lederer, Brenna Mason, Caroline Parsons, Emily Pullen and Ginny Whitman were honored prior to the start of the game on Senior Day.

Coy, Lederer and junior Eliza Doll accounted for Colgate's goals.

The Raiders controlled a majority of the first-half momentum. Coy rifled a shot that sailed just high of the crossbar in the seventh minute before Colgate compiled a 7-0 shot advantage through the opening 25 minutes. Navy capitalized on a Raider defensive miscue in the 26th minute, however, when Rachel Feldman tapped one in on an open net to give the Mids a 1-0 lead.

Coy and Whitman both had opportunities in the closing minutes of the first half, but Navy was able to carry its 1-0 advantage into halftime.

First-year keeper Kelly Chiavaro came up with a key save to open the second half before Colgate found an equalizer in the 54th minute. First-year Mara Cosentino sent a long pass to Coy who sped past a Navy defender and buried the ball into the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Just over four minutes later, a Colgate corner kick led to a scuffle in front of the net as Lederer was able to boot in a loose ball to put Colgate ahead 2-1.

The Raiders continued to pressure the Navy defense over the next 15 minutes before Doll added another Colgate tally in the 73rd minute. Lederer sent a centering pass to Doll at the top of the 18-yard box before the junior midfielder bent a beauty into the upper left-hand corner of the net to give Colgate a 3-1 lead.

The Mids were able to rally as Feldman intercepted a goal kick in the 82nd minute and sent it into the upper left-hand corner of the net. Feldman then secured a hat trick in the 86th minute when a Colgate foul on the edge of the box led to a penalty kick that she drilled into the left side netting to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to overtime.

Both teams had a couple of quality chances in the first overtime period. Chiavaro came up with a pair of huge saves towards the end of the term to send the contest to double overtime. The Raiders opened the second overtime with three shots, but it was Navy who was able to capitalize when Cadie Higginson scored the game-winner in the 106th minute to cement the 4-3 Mids victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Kathy Brawn
  • "I thought that determination that we showed to go from being down a goal to turning the game around and being up by two was absolutely fantastic. We need to lasso that and bring that with us for an entire game. Navy did a good job grabbing back the momentum."
  • "We have to take the good things from this game and put them together through a full contest. We need to march through these next three regular-season games and try an play our way into the tournament."
  • "This senior class has quietly, but very strongly, set a great example for the younger players. They've elevated their own games and have gone above and beyond in terms of setting a really positive culture on our team. That's something that we'll take with us and will be part of our program long after they're gone."
