HAMILTON – Colgate women's soccer senior
Sarah Coy broke open a scoreless game in the 84th minute to help the Raiders capture a 1-0 win over rival Cornell Monday night in non-league action at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Sophomore keeper
Laura Leonard recorded six saves in goal to earn her first career win and secure Colgate's second clean sheet of the season.
The Big Red opened the game with a shot and a pair of corner kicks in the opening three minutes, but none were able to be converted. First-year
Lindsey Wiley tallied Colgate's first shot of the game in the 12th minute, but Cornell keeper Meghan Kennedy was there to make the stop.
The Big Red peppered Colgate with nine shots in the next 25 minutes, but Leonard and the Raider defense hung tough. Colgate's best offensive opportunity of the half came in the 41st minute on a free kick right outside the 18-yard box, but
Caroline Parsons' attempt skidded through traffic and just wide of the post as the game went to halftime scoreless.
The Raiders picked up pace in the second half, controlling the momentum and keeping the ball in their offensive third. Coy had a breakaway opportunity in the 67th minute, but her attempt sailed just high over the crossbar. Just a few minutes later, first-year
Abby Sotomayor fired a shot on frame that Cornell second-half keeper Kelsey Tierney barely punched out of harm's way.
Colgate continued to threaten, out-shooting the Big Red 12-5, before Coy tapped in the game winner. She took a pass from first-year
Mara Cosentino and sent it into the lower left-hand corner of the net to put Colgate ahead 1-0. Leonard and the Raider defense took care of the rest, fending off two Cornell shots, to capture the 1-0 victory.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach
Kathy Brawn
- "It was a non-league game, but it was a non-league game against Cornell and those are always huge. It was important that we come away with the win and I thought that our players stepped into the game with a great mentality. We looked at some different options lineup wise and I thought a lot of people stepped up in really good form, which is encouraging to see leading up to these next few regular-season games."
- "As a coaching staff we felt like there has been such great effort at practice day in and day out. We thought that the level of play has looked so good that it was the right thing to do to get some different players in the starting lineup. I liked a lot of what we got to see today. This is a team that really plays for one another, not just with one another, and that showed today by how supportive everybody was of one another's efforts."
