HAMILTON – First-year
Aram Ouligian recorded his first career goal and it was a big one.
The Needham, Massachusetts, native helped Colgate secure a 2-1 overtime victory here Sunday afternoon over UC Riverside, after blasting home the game-winner in the 93rd minute. The play originated 40-yards out off a free kick.
Ethan Kutler stepped up to the set piece and played a simple pass over to
Chase Pagani on the left side of the box. Pagani one-timed a cross over the defensive line to a waiting Ouligian, who finished it home for the game's final goal.
Along with his assist on the day, Kutler also netted the Raiders' first goal just 10 minutes into the contest. An equalizer from UC Riverside in the 22nd minute made for an interesting rest of the match. Despite three solid chances from Colgate in the second half, the game was forced to overtime.
Ouligian's tally just 2:15 into the extra period sealed the deal for the Raiders, handing them their first victory of the year.
With the win, head coach
Erik Ronning also ties former Colgate men's soccer coach John W. Beyer for second most victories in a career with 81. Beyer was at the helm from 1966-79.
Colgate has made it a habit of scoring early in games this season. Of the Raiders' first three goals scored on the year, all have come in the opening 15 minutes of play.
The Raiders' opening goal on Sunday's game was no different. Kutler put Colgate ahead 10:10 into the contest, after a great feed from
Tim Oberg. The first-year intercepted the ball near midfield and played a one-touch throughball into Kutler, who was streaking up the field. Kutler collected the pass and took one touch before firing a shot on target just inside the 18-yard box. His initial shot was saved but not the rebound, as he beat the goalie to the loose ball and tapped it in for the game's opening goal.
The visitors answered in the 22nd minute, however, knotting the score at 1-all.
Despite some solid chances in the remaining minutes of the first half, the teams went into the break tied at 1-1.
Kutler nearly put the Raiders back on top 10 minutes into the second half when
Jared Stroud sent him a well-placed ball into the box. Kutler collected the pass and then tried to volley it toward the opposite post. Unfortunately for Colgate, UC Riverside goalie Ashkan Khosravi made a fingertip save to keep the game all square.
Then with 15 minutes remaining in regulation
Troy Moo Penn fired a driven ball on goal from the top of the box. But again, Khosravi was there to make the stop, falling on the rebound before any Raiders could tap it in.
Colgate had one final last-ditch effort with one minute remaining in regulation when Stroud and Kutler again teamed up for a brilliant opportunity. Stroud played Kutler in a throughball down the right side of the field, where the junior then one-timed an off-balance shot far post. His attempt beat the goalie but was stopped by the opposite post, bouncing back into play.
Neither team was able to tally the go-ahead goal, sending the game into overtime.
The Raiders needed less than three minutes to end the game, as Ouligian's marker handed Colgate the one-goal victory.
Raiders goalie
Ricky Brown made six saves throughout the contest, including an impressive fingertip save on a driven shot from Emilio Huerta midway through the first half.
