Moo Penn With Game-Winner Over Dartmouth

Raiders Take Down the Big Green 1-0 For First Road Win of Season; Moo Penn Notches First of Year

HANOVER, N.H. – Colgate men's soccer saw sophomore Troy Moo Penn tally the game's only goal to help secure the Raiders' first road victory of the season.

Colgate traveled to Ivy League foe Dartmouth on Friday night where it was a stalemate in the first half. Just after the break, though, Chase Pagani was taken down on the left side of the field, awarding the Raiders a free kick at the corner of the 18-yard box. Ethan Kutler quickly played the set piece to a waiting Moo Penn just a few yards away, who then blasted it into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. His shot froze the Big Green goalie James Hickok and handed the Raiders the eventual game-winner in the 54th minute.

Raider goalie Ricky Brown finished with six saves but none were more important then a massive stop in the final four minutes when he stiffed Matt Greer on a driven volley just inside the box.

After a back-and-forth opening 45 minutes, neither team earned a great scoring chance on target.

Early in the second half, however, Colgate turned up its offensive pressure and took the 1-0 edge after Moo Penn notched his first tally of the season. Kutler was awarded the assist on the play, handing him number two on the year.

Colgate controlled much of the play over the next 20 minutes until Dartmouth began to press the Raider backline.

The Big Green had their best chance to equalize with four minutes remaining when Greer volleyed a shot on target from inside the box. Brown was there, though, to secure his team's one-goal advantage by making a brilliant stop to push it out for a corner kick.

Kutler nearly made it a 2-0 Raider lead with under three minutes to play when he riffled a shot toward goal straight off a free kick in the center of the field. Hickok was forced to punch it out, however, and away from danger.

Colgate fended off any Big Green final attempts on goal to protect its 1-0 victory and earn its first shutout of the season. The Raiders' lone goal was also the first given up by Dartmouth this season after it headed into the contest with a record of 1-0-1.

With the win, head coach Erik Ronning surpassed former Colgate men's soccer coach John W. Beyer for second most victories in a career with 82. Beyer was at the helm from 1966-79.

The Raiders have some time off before hosting Air Force and Duquesne in the CU Inaria Classic beginning Friday. That contest is slated for 7 p.m. on Beyer-Small '76 Field.
