Colgate Solid Against Nationally Ranked Foe

Raiders Fall to No. 16-Ranked South Carolina, 2-0, Cummings Records Five Saves

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Despite dropping a 2-0 decision to No. 16-ranked South Carolina on Friday night, Colgate gave its nationally ranked opponent a tough game.

The Raiders defense was solid throughout much of the contest, blocking great Gamecock chances early on. Unfortunately, two quick goals within seven minutes, spanning late in the first half and early into the second, ultimately handed the hosts the victory.

USC and Colgate played an evenly matched opening 40 minutes with the Raiders registering three corner kicks to the Gamecocks' one. A late goal with four minutes remaining in the half, however, gave USC the one-goal edge heading into the break. On the Gamecocks' only corner kick of the half, Cummings made an impressive initial save on a shot from Paige Bendell but wasn't able to fall on the rebound fast enough as Coryn Bajema finished off the rebound.

The Gamecocks then tacked on what would be an insurance goal just 2:20 into the second period, creating a small hole for the Raiders to work themselves out of.

Colgate tried to rally but its nationally ranked opponent foe continued to keep the offensive line in check.

The Raiders defense came up strong a few more times in the contest, stopping all four Gamecock corner kicks as well as some late second-half surges.

Erin Cummings pushed aside five USC shots, improving her season total to 28.
