Early Second-Half Goals Difference for Terriers in 2-0 Decision; Cummings with Five Saves

HAMILTON – Boston University scored twice in a 1:17 stretch early in the second half to defeat Colgate women's soccer 2-0 here Wednesday night.

The Raiders and Terriers played even soccer for the first 47 minutes until Colgate was whistled for a foul in the penalty area. BU's Clare Pleuler converted the spot-kick into the upper center netting for a 1-0 Terriers lead at 47:09.

Just over a minute later, BU's Christina Wakefield was played through on a solid ball down the right side. Wakefield caught up to the pass and centered it low into the box, where Jesse Shreck one-timed it into the right upper corner for her first goal of the season at the 48:24 mark.

The Terriers kept the pressure on just enough for the rest of the game to limit Colgate to one shot attempt over the final 45 minutes. Shots ended 12-6 in favor of the visitors.

Colgate's best second-half scoring chance was off a corner when Lysette Roman fired a bullet on goal that was stopped one-handed by BU's Alyssa Parisi. Colgate had two second-half corners and three for the game.

Colgate's Erin Cummings posted five saves to match Parisi. Fouls were 10-9, Colgate.20834

The Raiders jump-started their offense in the opening 10 minutes with three great opportunities on frame.

Sarah Coy started things off by drilling a hard shot on goal from 15-yards out, but BU was just able to get a body on it to block it away.

Less than a minute later the Raiders thought they had broken the deadlock when the ball nearly crossed the goal line on a header from Roman. Unfortunately, the Terriers saw goalie Parisi make a great saved to keep it out of the goal. She wasn't able to fall on the rebound though as Corey Persson collected the ball within the six-yard box and tried her luck on net. Again, BU's defense was there to stiff the Raiders, eventually clearing the ball away from danger.

The Terriers gave the Raiders a small scare with 26 minutes remaining in the opening period but Cummings was strong between the posts to keep the game knotted at 0-0.20835

Nearly four minutes after the break, BU found itself up 2-0 after a penalty kick goal and another tally 77 seconds later.

The Terriers then locked down its defense, denying the Raiders any strong scoring chances in the remaining minutes.

Colgate is back in action Sunday when it heads to Bucknell for a noon Patriot League tilt. Live stats and video will be available at the start of the contest.

From The Source
• Colgate Head Coach Kathy Brawn: (on highlights from the game despite the loss) "There were many. I thought people stepped in off the bench and did a really good job of keeping the level of play up and sticking to the game plan. We played a pretty decent first half but we just need to deal with the pressure of the fact that some of our players are going to be marked and we have to deal with that a little bit better."

"We've also got to force the issue a little in terms of going to goal and not waiting for things to be so perfect, kind of create our own chances and opportunities and look to take advantage of that. Once we get to that, which we really need to get to by Sunday against Bucknell, we will be playing at a whole other level. Until then we are going to be making things a little difficult for ourselves. It's something the players understand and are fully prepared to step up their game for the Bison team that we will face on Sunday."
