SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In a very evenly matched game, Colgate women's soccer was unfortunately on the losing end of a 1-0 decision against a talented St. John's squad here Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders and Red Storm both had chances in the opening period but it was St. John's who tallied the eventual game-winner with less than six minutes to play in the first half.
Colgate tried its luck midway through the first period when
Jenna Raepple found
Sarah Coy just inside the 18-yard box. The Boca Raton, Florida, native then fired a shot toward goal but the Red Storm goalie, Diana Poulin, was there come up with the save.
St. John's took their one-goal advantage into the break but immediately after halftime, Colgate turned up its offensive pressure in hopes of finding the equalizer.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Coy had another opportunity after a spin move inside the box. Her attempt, however, sailed just high over the goal.
Sophomore
Emily Crichlow followed that up with a solid chance again inside the 18-yard box thanks to a great feed from Raepple. The Edmonds, Washington, native collected the pass and drilled a shot on frame. Unfortunately, her shot skimmed off the crossbar and out of play.
Colgate then had a chance to knot the score after St. John's was called for a handball inside the box. Poulin came up with a great save on the penalty kick, though, to keep her team ahead.
The Raiders had a few chances in the final minutes of play but ultimately fell 1-0.
Erin Cummings was strong in net for Colgate making four saves throughout the contest.
Colgate is back in action on Friday when it heads to No. 8 ranked South Carolina for a 7 p.m. tilt.

FROM THE SOURCE•
Colgate Head Coach Kathy Brawn: (on the game) "We had a good game plan coming in and our players did an outstanding job carrying that out."
"We had a lapse right before that first goal and against a team like St. John's that can't happen. Beyond that, some players stepped up and did well with things overall. We are finding out more about ourselves as a team but we certainly need to find ways to win games. I think that opportunity presented itself in this game but we're just not quite at the point where we are recognizing it and pulling the trigger when we need to. We will get that point on top of things, build on the good things we are doing and move along to get ready for South Carolina and Providence next weekend."
UP NEXT• The Raiders will next head to No. 8 South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m.
