Jones, Ladd Score For Raiders in Opener

Junior Whitney Jones and freshman Stina Ladd tallied second half goals in Colgate’s season-opening contest at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Conn – Junior Whitney Jones and freshman Stina Ladd tallied second half goals for the Raiders, but Fairfield used a hat trick from junior Ana Burgoyne to post a 6-2 victory over Colgate in collegiate field hockey action Saturday at University Field.

Burgoyne staked the Stags to a 2-0 lead with the first two of her three tallies during the opening 7:44 of the contest before Ariane Vo Schenck and Ruth Smalbraak found the back of the cage in the final five minutes of the first half to stake Fairfield to a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.

Jones and Ladd attempted to pull the Raiders back into the contest, scoring a little more than five minutes apart midway through the second half to trim the Colgate deficit to 4-2. Burgoyne kept the Raiders from getting any closer, however, completing her hat trick less than a minute after the second Colgate tally to help Fairfield complete the season-opening victory.
