Balanced Raiders Clip Bucknell, 10-8

Danehy Records Career Goalkeeping Win No. 1 in Relief of Burke; Colgate’s First 4-0 Start Since 1993

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Imagine getting your first collegiate goalkeeping win AND scoring your first goal. In the same game.

Colgate's Jake Danehy nearly pulled off the rare double – his 50-yard shot attempt sailed inches wide. But Danehy did his job in relief and boosted the 20th-ranked Raiders to a 10-8 Patriot League win over Bucknell here Saturday.

Danehy picked up his first career goalkeeping victory after taking over for starter Brandon Burke, who injured himself late in the first quarter. Danehy finished with seven saves, including six in the pivotal second half.

Colgate is 4-0 for the first time since the 1993 Raiders opened with five straight wins. The Raiders also are the only 2-0 team in the Patriot League.

Ryan Walsh led a balanced Colgate attack with two goals and three assists. Anthony Abbadessa, Kevin Adams and Cameron Williams also scored two goals apiece in a close game throughout.

Just like last week against Lafayette, the Raiders broke from the gate quickly. Colgate led 4-0 by the 8:18 mark of the first quarter as Walsh, Matt Clarkson, Abbadessa and Adams found the net.

But Bucknell (2-2, 1-1 Patriot) rallied with five straight goals and a 5-4 lead midway in the second quarter. The last two of those goals came against Danehy, who was seeing his first playing time of the season.

Williams scored twice and now is third on the team with six goals.

But Danehy was getting his bearings and Colgate posted two huge goals before the half – Williams and Jack Stebbins doing the honors – to lead 6-5 at the break. It was still 8-7 Raiders entering the fourth when Adams scored the eventual game-winner off a nice feed from Clarkson.

Williams closed the scoring with 9:33 left when he bounced one home from a Peter Donato assist.

Colgate has a quick turnaround with a Tuesday afternoon game scheduled at Hobart. Faceoff is 4 p.m.

From the Sources
• Colgate head coach Mike Murphy: (On Danehy stepping in) "I know it's coach-speak, but it's the next man up. Jake does a great job in practice. There's a reason why he's our backup goalie, and he had a phenomenal day.
"The one thing I'm most impressed with is we went 13-of-13 clearing against one of the top riding teams in the country. That can be nerve-wracking when you are coming off the bench, but Jake's poise in that scenario throughout the course of the game – it doesn't show up in the stat sheet for a goalie. Clearing 100 percent against those guys makes me really proud of our team."
(On the balanced offense) "We've been that way. It's good that we can share the ball and we do a good job sharing the ball. Seven of our 10 goals were assisted, and that's the way you have to do it against Bucknell because they are so coordinated defensively. They do such a good job."
(On the momentum swings) "That's been the history of this rivalry. It's who can come out swinging first, and then you've got to be able to keep punching. Anytime you're in a Patriot League game, you're in a heavyweight fight."
(On the win) "When you go on the road and get a win, especially here – they are very good at home. They are a very good team, and for us to play the way did so consistently. Watching us for 60 minutes, I know we had some ups and downs, but I'm really proud of the way we played."
• Colgate attackman Ryan Walsh: (On the game) "We knew it was going to be a good game. Whenever we play them, it's always a dog fight. But the guys hung in mentally and physically; we're a tough team to beat.
"We play together and for each other, and it paid off in the end."
(On the physical play) "Like I said, it's a dog fight. We want to be a tough team. We don't want people to look forward to playing us."
(On the balanced scoring) "That's our strength. We have so many guys who can contribute goals and help our team, and it showed today."
• Colgate goalkeeper Jake Danehy: (On coming into the game) "Brandon is one of my best friends on the team, so seeing him go down I was shocked and scared for him. But Coach said, 'Jake, get ready.' So I ran right in. Brandon's a great friend but I had to forget about it on the field."
(On settling in) "At first I was a little tense, but then once I started getting into the game it felt good. I was able to get into a rhythm."
(On his point-blank saves) "It was really fun and we were working together. The middies played really well and they were breaking out and getting open. We just worked the ball around and kept it alive."
(On his goal-scoring attempt from 50 yards out) "Oh! If it had been two inches more to the left, I would have been a lot happier. The goal was wide open and I saw that Abbadessa and Kevin (Adams) were behind the cage, so if I missed it we were getting it back. It was a win-win."
