BALTIMORE – Senior
Matt McMullen recorded career-highs of 19 points and 17 rebounds but it couldn't help Colgate fend off Loyola on Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders ultimately dropped the contest in triple overtime, 80-78. The last time Colgate played to three extra periods was way back on Jan. 17, 1981. The Raiders fell in that game, 38-37, to Catholic.
Despite Sunday's loss, Colgate claimed a top-four seed in the Patriot League Tournament and will host in the quarterfinal round for the first time since 2008 because of the other results in the league from the day.
Colgate had a seven-point lead with 1:29 remaining in regulation after
Ethan Jacobs converted both of his free throw attempts. The Greyhounds, however, closed the game on a 7-0 run, including hitting the game-tying shot with six seconds to play, to knot the score at 65-all and send the game into overtime.
It was Loyola, this time, who had the two-point advantage with 18 seconds remaining in the first overtime.
Damon Sherman-Newsome hit two clutch free throws though to make it 71-71 and extended the game.
McMullen made it a 74-72 Raiders edge with nearly two minutes left in the second overtime. Colgate then portrayed some strong defense holding the Greyhounds scoreless for the next 1:52. Unfortunately, a layup from Loyola's Andre Walker with one second remaining sent the game into a third and final extra period.
With the game tied at 76-76 with two minutes and 30 second to play in the game, Walker converted on two free throws to give the Greyhounds the 78-76 edge. Jacobs then finished off a layup for the Raiders with 38 seconds left but a layup from Walker found its mark with seven ticks remaining to ultimately secure the hosts the victory.

McMullen tallied 19 points, while pulling down an impressive 17 boards -- both career-highs. His rebound total was the most by any Colgate player since Nick Pascale '12 grabbed 15 against Bucknell on Feb. 20, 2011. McMullen also added three assists, one block and one steal on the day.
Jacobs,
Damon Sherman-Newsome and
Luke Roh all posted double-figures in the game with 17, 14 and 12 points, respectively. Jacobs matched his career-high three blocks, while also pulling down seven rebounds of his own.
The Raiders finished the game shooting 42.2 percent from the floor and hit just 6-of-20 from long-range. Colgate also went 18-for-26 from the charity stripe.
There were 14 tie scores to go along with 13 lead changes in the contest.

Straight From The Source•
Colgate head coach Matt Langel: (on his overall thoughts from the game) "Obviously, a tough result for us. Winning on the road, in our league, is very difficult. And we know that."
"I thought we did mostly everything necessary to be in the position we wanted towards the end of regulation. Up seven with less than 90 seconds left is where you want to be. Obviously, we needed to make our free throws or get a defensive stop and we weren't able to do either."
"I give credit to Loyola for playing a tough, physical game and working hard to get themselves into the paint and to the free throw line on the offensive end. (Andre) Walker, for a first-year, stepped up and made some timely plays and free throws for them."
"I liked the shots we got in both regulation and overtime. A few times we got into the paint on post ups or drives and weren't able to convert or get to the free throw line ourselves. In the close game that this became, that ends up being the difference."
Up Next• The Raiders continue their road swing at Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
• The Leopards are coming off a 63-61 victory at Lehigh on Sunday.
• Heading into Wednesday's contest, Lafayette sits with an 8-8 conference mark and sit tied with Boston U. for fourth place in the league.
• The Raiders and Leopards will go head-to-head for their 96th all-time meeting. Colgate holds the slight 48-47 record advantage.
• Lafayette took a 59-54 victory over the Raiders earlier in the season when Dan Trist went for a game-high 24 points.
