Colgate Closes Out 2014-15 Season

Three Middle Period Goals Not Enough As Raiders Fall 5-3 to Rensselaer

TROY, N.Y. – Senior Melissa Kueber scored two goals in 1:03 to hand her the second fastest two-goal scoring span in Colgate Women's Hockey history.

Unfortunately, it wasn't enough on Saturday afternoon as the Raiders ultimately dropped a decision 5-3 to Rensselaer and closed out their 2014-15 campaign with an overall record of 7-25-3 and a 4-16-2 conference mark.

Kueber finished her Colgate career with a team-high 11 season goals after registering two in the game. Fellow classmate Miriam Drubel also tallied a goal in the contest for her sixth of the year.

The game was a high-scoring affair with seven of the eight goals being scored on the power play. RPI converted on 4-of-5, while the Raiders went 3-for-9 on the man-up advantage.

Colgate outshot the Engineers 37-26, including two periods with double-digit shot attempts.

The hosts opened the contest scoring the game's first goal just three minutes in. They added a second tally, this time on the power play, with eight minutes remaining in the opening frame to create a 2-0 gap between the teams heading into the first intermission.

A tripping penalty 4:32 into the middle period, awarded RPI another man-up advantage. The Engineers pushed their lead to 3-0 just 28 seconds later when Taylor Mahoney found the back of the net.

RPI earned its third extra skater tally before Colgate was able to answer with one of its own. Drubel finally got the Raiders on the board 11 minutes into the second frame.

Two more quick goals from Colgate, both from the stick of Kueber, over a four-minute span, made it a 4-3 hockey game. Kueber's two goals took her just one minute and three seconds to score, which places her second all-time in the fastest two-goal scoring span column. That mark was just one second behind matching the current record, which came from Kara Leene on Feb. 25, 2006 against Union.

Unfortunately, two penalties on Colgate early in the third period awarded RPI a 5-on-3 power play. The hosts were able to slide one past the Raiders netminder to ultimately secure the victory.

Brittney Brooks made the start in net recording 13 saves before Susan Allen split time making eight saves of her own during the second 30 minutes.

Straight From The Source
Head coach Greg Fargo (on his overall thoughts from the game) "We were slow out of the gate today but we climbed our way back into it. We responded well after a tough first period. Our seniors led the charge the rest of the way and despite giving up two goals in the second period, I though we were playing good hockey. Our power play gave us a chance by scoring three goals on the five minute major and that helped us clawed our way back into it."

(on his overall thoughts from the season) "From a results standpoint, this hasn't been the season we imagined. The highs were really high and the lows were challenging for this group. All the experiences this year will help us to improve."

"We have a lot of good things to look forward to in this program looking ahead and we can't wait to get started. It's going to be an off season of growth for the group that's returning."
