Colgate Remains Unbeaten with 3-3 Tie

Larson Nets First of Career Against Connecticut, Rando Finishes with 23 Saves

STORRS, Conn. – Head women's hockey coach Greg Fargo and his Raiders squad remained unbeaten on the early season after tying Connecticut 3-3 on Sunday.

After a scoreless opening period, the Maroon and White grabbed the first and last tally of the middle frame thanks to power play goals from Megan Sullivan and Bailey Larson. The hosts were able to register one in the period as well but the Raiders took their 2-1 edge into the last frame.

Annika Zalewski handed Colgate a two-goal lead early in the third period but two unanswered goals from the Huskies knotted the score at 3-3.

In overtime, Nicole Gass gave the Raiders a great opportunity on net, but her shot ricocheted off the post and back into play. In the remaining minutes, neither team recorded the game-winner and the game ended in a draw.

The first period ended scoreless, despite a great effort from the Colgate offense. During the frame, the Raiders held the 15-6 shot advantage but weren't able to find the back of the net.

The second period saw both teams get on the board, with Colgate scoring two and UConn one.

Sullivan struck first for the Raiders on the power play less than five minutes into the period after the Huskies were called for hooking. The tally earned her number three for the season.

UConn's Margaret Zimmer then answered back minutes later, to tie up the contest at 1-all.

First-year Larson gave Colgate back its edge with the first of her career again on the power play. With the man-up advantage, Zalewski and Shelby Perry teamed up to find Larson, who finished it off, putting her team up 2-1 going into the final period of play.

The Raiders continued their scoring ways when Zalewski netted one seven minutes into the third.

Unfortunately, the Huskies were able to tie the game at 3-3 with back-to-back goals from Leah Buress and Brittany Berisoff.

Both teams held off any potential goal-scoring chances in the remaining minutes, sending the contest into overtime.

Overtime
Colgate had several scoring chances in overtime, including Gass' shot off the post but ultimately weren't able to capitalize. Goaltender Ashlynne Rando made several key stops, keeping UConn off the board and securing the tie.

Rando finished the contest with 23 saves, while UConn's Elaine Chuli made 40 stops.

The Raiders are back in action on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Merrimack for two games. Both contests are set for 2 p.m. at Lawler Rink. Live stats and video will be available.

From The Source
Head coach Greg Fargo (on his overall thoughts from the game) "That was a good college hockey game today. UConn is a feisty team and I give them a lot of credit for coming back in the game."

"Today we liked our team's play and work ethic for about 50 minutes. Our power play was exceptional and our penalty kill was solid. We were undisciplined at times in the third and it cost us. We've got to do a better job of keeping with the game plan regardless of what happens on the ice. We were in complete control of the game until we got into penalty trouble."
