Colgate, Cornell Play to Scoreless Draw

Rivalry Game Deadlocked at 0-0; Cummings Finishes with Six Saves

ITHACA, N.Y. – Colgate Women's Soccer played to a 0-0 double overtime tie with Cornell on Monday night.

The Raiders had the better of the play but were unable to put one in the back of the net.

Colgate's best opportunity came in the second extra period when Jenna Panepinto fired a volleyed shot after a scrum in front of the goal. Immediately after an Emily Pullen corner kick in the 105th minute, the ball was loose inside the box. Panepinto eyed up the bouncing ball and drilled a shot on frame. Her attempt ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play, though, ending Colgate's hopes of a game-winner.

Erin Cummings was solid in net for the Raiders, compiling six saves, including a diving stop with 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

In the opening five minutes, Jayne Maccio fired a long-range shot from outside the 18-yard box but her attempt sailed just high over the crossbar.

The rest of the period was even with both teams maintaining possession.

After halftime, Colgate tried to break through with numerous attacking chances but ultimately the Big Red defense was able to fend any Raider opportunities off.

In overtime Jenna Raepple earned a good scoring chance when she was lofted a ball over the Cornell backline. She was able to get a touch on the bouncing ball but couldn't finish it off before the Big Red goalie came out to make the stop.

Then in double overtime, Panepinto's shot looked to have ended at all but missed the back of the goal by near millimeters.

Colgate is next in action Saturday at Navy for an always tough game against the Mids. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Sports Facility. Live stats are available at the start.

FROM THE SOURCE
• Colgate Head Coach Kathy Brawn: (on the game) "It was a good hard-fought game. It is a big rivalry and I was really happy with the way we came out and turned around our play from the first half to the second half and the overtimes. We didn't come out with a lot of energy in the opening period and we were fortunate enough to escape without giving up a goal. Our backs and Erin (Cummings) were so solid that they kept up in it. People were then able to pick it up along the way and it was a true team effort. Everybody got out there and played a role, did their part and at the end of the day just neither team was able to find the back of the net, but there was some good soccer played in between."

(on some of the first-years getting a chance to play in their first collegiate game) "A couple of them came in injured and it always takes a while to make the transition. What makes it really impressive about our whole team this year is that everybody has really stuck with things and worked really hard. I was really confident in that given the opportunity to play, they were going to step in and keep the level where it was. In many instances they were able to raise the level and that's a tribute to their work ethic, their pride and their talent as individuals and as a group."
