HAMILTON – Senior
Jenna Raepple blasted home the game-winner in the 98th minute to hand Colgate Women's Soccer a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross here Saturday night.
The Raiders jumped out in front early with a marker from
Catherine Williams in the 15th minute. The Raiders then held the majority of scoring chances until a goal from the Crusaders in the 70th minute knotted the score at 1-all. But after regulation, Colgate turned up its offensive pressure in the extra period, notching three shots, one of which was the game-ending tally.
Erin Cummings was strong in between the posts for Colgate, finishing with two saves.
Sarah Coy was awarded two assists in the game, after helping on both of the Raider goals.
Colgate started out with the game's first two changes on frame. The Raiders finally broke through on their third attempt when Coy collected the ball on the right side of the field. She took a few dribbles before sending a beautiful cross from the endline to the foot of Williams. The senior then volleyed the cross into the back of the net, freezing the Holy Cross goalie in her tracks.
The Raiders outshot the Crusaders 8-4 in the opening period but just took their one-goal edge into the break.
Colgate continued with chances off corner kicks in the second half, including a solid opportunity from
Lysette Roman on a header.
A few minutes later,
Eliza Doll tried her luck on target with a driven long-range shot from 30-yards out. Her attempt forced HC's goalie Brooke Holle to make a diving save to keep the Raiders out of the goal.
The Crusaders knotted the score at the 69:15 mark after Stephanie Lund sent a low cross into the box. The ball looked as though it was saved by Cummings, but somehow slid underneath her, where Aly Spencer was able to put it away.
The game tightened up in the remaining minutes with Raepple nearly ending it on another long-range shot that tested Holle. Her attempt, however, was pushed up and over the crossbar, halting any Raider chances of breaking the deadlock.
OvertimeThe extra period was the Raepple show, as she recorded all three shots in overtime. Her first try was just wide, her second just high, but three times a charm, as she didn't miss on her third attempt. Again, Coy beat her defender on the left side of the field, sending a long cross into the box. The ball took a bounce before Raepple finished it off at the back post on a one-timed shot.
Colgate has a quick turnaround as it faces nearby rival Cornell on Monday at 7 p.m. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start on Berman Field. Live stats and video are available at the start of the contest.

FROM THE SOURCE•
Colgate Head Coach Kathy Brawn: (on her thoughts from the game) "Things came together well. We did a good job against their pressure. They had some great opportunities but we stood strong with it and stuck to our game plan. We waited a long time but finally got a ball into the back post and we were able to finish it. It was great to see
Jenna Raepple back out on the field again. We are starting to get some people healthy and we can get a little more continuity and depth in what we are doing. It was a fun night."
(on how important this senior class is) "Team's kind of live or die by their seniors, and our seniors this past week or so stepped up. They've gotten not just their own focus, but the team to focus, in a different way and different level. You could see it out on the field tonight. Even throughout the warm up and this week at practice, they've brought it out on the field with them and took the team along with them. People responded to it really well."
