Colgate, Union Draw At 2-2

Raiders Finish Weekend with Three Big ECAC Hockey Points

HAMILTON – Colgate women's ice hockey finished the weekend with three big ECAC Hockey points after a 2-2 tie with Union on Saturday.

The Raiders jumped out to the 1-0 edge eight minutes into the middle frame after Melissa Kueber earned her seventh goal of the season. The Dutchwomen answered though two minutes later, knotting the score at 1-all.

Then with three minutes remaining in the period, the visitors tallied the go-ahead marker to send themselves into the second intermission with the one-goal lead.

Nicole Gass made the teams all square with her goal seven minutes and 16 seconds into the final frame to make for an exciting final period of hockey.

Neither team was able to record the game-winner in the final minutes of regulation pushing the game into overtime.

Colgate registered some solid chances in the extra period but was unable to find the back of the net and the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.

Junior Ashlynne Rando finished with 30 saves in the game, shifting her career total to 1,729.

The Raiders have a mid-week contest with rival Cornell on Tuesday in Starr Rink. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop.

Bottom Line
• Colgate 2, Union 2
• The Raiders earned their first tie of the season

Won-Lost Records
• Colgate shifts to 7-19-1 overall and 4-10-1 in ECAC Hockey play
• Union slides to 4-19-5 and 1-13-2, respectively

Facts & Figures
• The Dutchwomen slightly outshot the Raiders 32-26, including back-to-back periods with double-digit shots.
• Both teams converted on one of their power play chances with Union going 1-for-5 and Colgate 1-for-1.
• Kueber tallied her seventh goal of the year and jumped into a third-place tie on the team with 11 season points.
• Gass scored her only goal so far of the season when she ripped a shot from between the two faceoff circles to tie the score at 2-2.
• Kueber led the team overall with four shots in the contest, while Gass, Megan Sullivan and Katelyn Parker registered three each.
Miriam Drubel earned her sixth assist on Kueber's goal with Breanne Wilson-Bennett grabbing her eighth on Gass' marker.
• Rando posted 30 stops throughout the game, handing her 538 on the season.

How It Happened
• Colgate opened up the scoring 8:03 into the second frame after Keuber tallied her seventh goal of the season. Drubel fed a pass over the Kueber, who slid one past Union's netminder Shenae Lundberd for the game's first goal.
• However, the visitors knotted the score at 1-1 following a power play goal less than two minutes later. After the Raiders were called for tripping, Kathryn Tomaselli found the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season.
• With just three minutes remaining in that period, Tomaselli registered another goal, the go-ahead marker, to send the Raiders into the second intermission down by a goal.
• Six minutes into the final frame the Dutchwomen were called for interference and Gass converted on the man-up opportunity to tie the game at 2-all.
• Despite outshooting Union in the final minutes of regulation Colgate and its visitors played an extra five minutes of hockey.
• Union held the edge during overtime but strong defending from the Raiders forced the game to end in a draw.

Straight From The Source
Head coach Greg Fargo (on his team getting the early lead): "It was nice to get up 1-0 and set the tone for the game. It's always nice playing with the lead. We enjoy that."

"I credit Union tonight. They came out really hard. That was the grittiest Union team we've seen."

"Overall we did a good job and hung in there. We challenged the group in between periods to fight back being that we weren't quite at the level we needed to be at or even where we were yesterday.  We showed good fight in the third, got a big power play goal when we needed it and ended up walking away with a point."

"Anytime you are walking away from a game with points at this time of the year it's big."

Up Next
• The Raiders are back in Starr Rink on Tuesday when they host rival Cornell at 7 p.m. for another ECAC Hockey matchup.
• The Big Red are coming off a 7-1 victory over Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon.
