Colgate Drops Two in Doubleheader Setback

Bushee Solid Again for Raiders But Not Enough in 5-2 and 8-1 Loss to Boston U.

Marisa Dowling recorded a run-saving stop in game one and a single in game two but it wasn't enough as the Raiders fell to the Terriers twice on Saturday.

HAMILTON – Colgate took the early lead in both games but saw Boston University rally back twice to earn a 5-2 and 8-1 doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon.

The Raiders took a 2-0 edge into the top of the sixth in game one but watched the Terriers register five big runs to take over the advantage and eventually hold onto the victory.

In game two, Colgate jumped out to the 1-0 lead following a Marisa Dowling single, which scored Katie Bushee, who also drilled a single to lead off the inning. Unfortunately, the Terriers answered in the top of the second with three runs before notching five more runs throughout the remainder of the game to complete the day's sweep.

"We played good softball early on today but let ourselves down defensively in the late innings of game one," Colgate head coach Melissa Finley said. "We let them come back in both games today without fighting back and that was disappointing to see. We didn't support our pitchers and it would be great to see us get off to that early lead again tomorrow and stay strong through the full seven innings."

Colgate (9-23, 2-9 PL) was led by Bushee, who went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs, an RBI and a walk. Senior Tera Vaughn also added two hits and an RBI during her six at bats.

"Katie Bushee had another good day for us and has been our most consistent player, which is why I like her in the lead off spot. She makes things happen and it is too bad that we couldn't capitalize on that today," Finley said.

Boston U. (23-18, 7-4 PL) saw Mandy Fernandez record four hits, two runs and an RBI in her seven at bats. Emily Felbaum went 3-for-7 with two runs and two RBIs, while Jayme Mask tallied three hits, two runs and a walk during her seven plate appearances.

In game one, Bushee earned a lead off walk before stealing second to get a runner in scoring position. The Terriers were able to register two outs but a Vaughn single up the middle scored Bushee to lift Colgate 1-0 after the first.

Boston U. looked to have tied the game in the top of the second after placing runners on the corners. A brilliant stop from Dowling at shortstop, however, recorded the final out of the inning, not allowing the Terriers to touch home place.

The Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth after a one-out double from Eileen Ornousky. BU tallied the second out of the inning but a double from Bushee scored the Raider runner.

Unfortunately, a big sixth inning from the Terries gave them a three-run lead after posting five runs. BU forced Colgate to go down in order in the final two innings to ultimately secure the victory.

Melanie Russell earned the win for the Terriers after pitching a complete game allowing just three hits and two runs. Brigit Ieuter went 5.1 innings for the Raiders and gave up seven hits and five runs. Rookie Gillian Murray came in for relief allowing two runs.

Colgate again took the 1-0 edge in game two after the first thanks to hits from Bushee and Dowling. The rookie Bushee led off the inning with a single before shifting to second thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Haley Fleming. She moved another 60 feet on a passed ball before Dowling's single up the middle scored her for the one-run advantage.

The Terriers answered with three runs in the next inning to built a two-run deficit between the teams. Over the course of the remaining innings, BU notched five more runs to earn the victory.

Megan Carnase went 5.1 innings in the circle for Colgate allowing nine hits and seven runs, one of which was earned. Murray again came in for relief pitching 1.2 innings, giving up a run. Makinna Akers pitched a complete game for the Terriers, allowing six hits and one run for her fifth win of the season.

These two teams are back in action Sunday for the final game of this three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Eaton Street Field.
