Box Score EASTON, Pa. – Colgate registered a late rally but couldn't overcome a five-run hole, eventually falling to Lafayette 5-2 here Sunday afternoon.
The Raiders found themselves trailing by five runs after the fourth but were able to score in the sixth and seventh, which made for an exciting final few innings. Colgate, however, left seven baserunners on board and the Leopards ultimately grabbed the victory on Lafayette's senior day.
"We were not able to carry our momentum from yesterday into today," Colgate head coach
Melissa Finley said. "We let ourselves down defensively and gave them too big of a lead early on. We battled late but came up short."
Colgate (9-20, 2-7 PL) received a top performance from
Haley Fleming, who went 1-for-3 on the day with an RBI. Five other Raider players recorded hits throughout the game in
Katie Bushee,
Marisa Dowling,
Tera Vaughn,
Alex Wilson and
Eileen Ornousky.
Gillian Murray dips to 2-3 on the season as the Raiders starter after allowing six hits and three runs during her three innings of work. Sophomore
Megan Carnase came in for relief, going three innings as well and giving up one hit and two runs.
Lafayette (5-23, 3-9 PL) was led by Kristen Berger, who finished the day with two hits, two runs and an RBI in her three at bats. Bryn Gornick also notched two hits in her three plate appearances, while also posting two RBIs.
Senior Melissa Robinson earned the win on the mound for the Leopards, pitching a complete game and allowing six hits and two runs.
Lafayette recorded the game's first runs in the opening inning after Berger and Brown reached home.
They added three more runs in the third and fourth, which created a five-run deficit between the teams.
Colgate would not go away, however, as it sparked two late rallies in the sixth and seventh innings.
Dowling led off the sixth by singling to the shortstop, getting a runner on base.
Mariel Schlaefer then reached base on a fielder's choice when the Leopards tagged Dowling out at second. Vaughn followed that up by singling, which advanced Schlaefer to third before the sophomore stole home for the Raiders first run of the game.
In the top of the seventh, Ornousky hit a one-out single to right field to get a Raider runner on base. Bushee then advanced her to second following a ground out. On the ensuing play Fleming tripled to right center, scoring Ornousky and cutting the Leopards lead down to three runs. Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to complete the comeback as Lafayette registered the final out of the game to record the win.
Colgate is back in action Tuesday when it welcomes Albany for a non-conference doubleheader at Eaton Street Field. The games are expected to begin at 3 p.m.
