Rookie Power Falls Short For Raiders

Wilson and Bushee Lead Colgate But Can’t Lift Raiders Past Lehigh, Fall 6-4

Alex Wilson went 2-for-3 with two runs but the Raiders dropped a 6-4 decision to the Mountain Hawks
Box Score

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Rookie Alex Wilson and Katie Bushee both posted two hits in the game for Colgate, but the Raiders couldn't get past preseason favorite Lehigh, as they dropped a 6-4 decision on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 6-0 advantage after three innings but a late rally from Colgate (5-15, 0-3 PL) made for an exciting final few innings. Despite the Raiders notching three runs in the top of the seventh, the Mountain Hawks held on to secure their victory.

Wilson went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Bushee added two hits, two RBIs and a run during her four at bats. Mariel Schleader and Jennifer Martin also both registered hits and an RBI in the loss.

Sophomore pitchers Brigit Ieuter and Megan Carnase split time in the circle with both players throwing for three innings. Ieuter earned the start allowing nine hits and six runs, before Carnase came in for relief giving up only four hits during her tenure on the mound.

Lehigh (11-10, 3-0 PL) saw MacKenzie Velasquez finish the day going 2-for-3 with two runs to lead the Mountain Hawks. Alexis Watanabe, Morgan Decker, Cassie Waggy, and Ashley Cole also all added two hits in the game.

Ashley Quigley earned the win after she pitched a complete game, allowing nine hits and four runs.

The Raiders started the game singling in the first to get a runner on base but were unable to bring her home as the Mountain Hawks registered the next three outs.

Lehigh notched two runs in the bottom of the inning to take the early 2-0 edge before making it a 6-0 advantage after a four-run third inning.

Colgate would not falter, however, as it registered its first run in the top of the fifth. With one out in the inning, Wilson singled to get a Raider runner on board. Martin followed that up with a solid double to left center, scoring Wilson all the way from first.

Then in the seventh the Raiders sparked a rally, which resulted in three runs. Wilson again started things off singling to get a runner on base. Martin advance her to second on the ensuing play when she singled to first base. The Mountain Hawks registered one out on a fielder's choice during the next at bat, which put runners on the corners for Colgate. Bushee then delivered the next big bat, tripling to center field, scoring both base runners. Schlaefer hit a sacrifice fly on the ensuing play to bring Bushee home but unfortunately that would be the closest they would come as the Mountain Hawks tallied the final out to take the win.

Bushee now leads the Raiders with two triples on the season, while also being tied for leading the team with 22 hits.

Colgate has a bye weekend before they welcome Army for three games in another Patriot League matchup and its home opener on April 5.

During their off weekend the Raiders are hosting an ALS fundraiser called Dodge for a Cure, which will take place Saturday at 12 p.m. To find out more about this event and to donate to their cause, click HERE.
