CHARLESTON, S.C. – Colgate closed out the Charleston Southern Tournament on Sunday falling to the host Buccaneers, 8-0 in six innings.

The Raiders recorded three hits throughout the game, coming from the bats of Katie Bushee, Tera Vaughn and Jennifer Martin.

Charleston Southern recorded three runs in the opening inning, which forced the Raiders to play from behind early in  the game. Colgate was able to get some hits, sparking hopes of a rally, but eight stranded base runners kept the Raiders off the scoreboard. The Buccaneers added to their advantage in the third and fifth innings before ultimately securing the victory in the sixth with their eighth and final run. The game was then called due to the eight-run rule.

Colgate drops to 0-5 on the season after completing its opening weekend and first time playing outside this year.

Sophomore Mariel Schlaefer earned two walks, which helped the Raiders get base runners, while Brigit Ieuter pitched five innings allowing nine hits and seven runs, four of those being earned. Megan Carnase came in for relief giving up one hit and one run.

Charleston Southern (10-9-1) saw Stephanie Bergmann go 2-for-2 with a run and three RBI. Georgi Delio added two runs and two hits, while Stephanie Sbardella notched a run and an RBI after going 1-for-2 in the game.

Cheyenne Gandara pitched all six innings for the Buccaneers allowing just three hits, while recording nine strikeouts.

Bushee started the game singling up the middle in the top of the first. On the next at bat, Schlaefer hit a sacrifice bunt to move Bushee into scoring position. Unfortunately, the Raiders were unable to bring her home as the Buccaneers escaped out of the inning not conceding any runs.

Charleston Southern notched three runs in the bottom half of the inning to give itself a 3-0 edge heading into the second.

Just like they had done in the opening inning, the Raiders kick off the second with a single. This time it was Vaughn's turn to place one through the left side to get on base. But again, the Buccaneers were able to record the next three outs before Vaughn could reach home.

Colgate saw its host tally runs in the third and fifth innings to head into the sixth with a 7-0 advantage.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Vaughn reached first following a fielding error to get the Raiders a base runner. On the ensuing play Martin singled to second base, which advanced Vaughn to third. The Buccaneers registered a strikeout on the next at bat, however, to keep their shutout hopes alive.

Charleston Southern touched home plate one more time in the bottom half of the inning, to ultimately secure the win 8-0.

The Raiders are back in action Friday when they travel to Orlando, Fla. for the UCF Spring Fling, which begins at 9 a.m. against Bowling Green.
