Colgate Bounces Back To Down Lehigh

Raiders fight back to take final three sets and knock off league-leading Lehigh Saturday

HAMILTON – Paced by a balanced attack that saw three players record double-digit kills, Colgate recorded a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over league-leading Lehigh Saturday at Cotterell Court.
 
Senior Diane Seely recorded 12 kills to lead the Raiders while sophomore Kathleen Harris added 11 spikes and senior Kenzie Hume pitched in 10. Junior Jackie Macy and freshman Molly Smith both finished with double-doubles as Macy notched a team-best 29 assists and added 13 digs while Smith finished with 17 assists and 10 digs. Harris and freshman Elena recorded 16 digs apeice as Harris posted her team-leading fourth double-double of the season.
 
Sophomore Morgan Lowe tallied 16 kills and senior Jade Van Streepen added 15 for Lehigh. Junior Stephanie Slater added 12 spikes while junior Amy Matula dished out a match-best 46 assists. Sophomore Mariah Brantley led three Mountain Hawk players in double-digit digs with 22 as Van Streepen and Matula recorded 16 and 10, respectively, to give both players double-doubles.

Won-Lost Records
- Colgate leveled its mark in league play at 2-2 and improved to 8-6 on the season as it recorded its second five-set victory in as many contests.
- Lehigh suffered its first loss of conference play to drop to 6-1 in Patriot League play while also moving to 11-8 overall.
 
How It Happened
- Holding a slim 17-15 lead in the opening frame, Lehigh rattled off three straight points to spark an 8-1 run that closed out the set and gave the Mountain Hawks a 25-16 victory.
- The second set saw Lehigh once again brake away from the Raiders late in the frame. Holding a slim 17-15 margin, the Mountain Hawks notched four straight points to take a 20-15 lead and never look back as they recorded a 25-20 victory and took a 2-0 lead.
- In a tight third set that featured a total of 11 ties and four lead changes, Colgate trailed 19-18 late in the frame before an attack error sparked the Raiders to tally seven of the final 10 points to post a 25-22 decision and extend the match.
- Colgate found itself trailing 5-2 early in the fourth set before using a 13-5 spurt to build a 15-10 advantage. The Raiders would lead by as many as eight during the frame before setting on a 25-18 victory to force a fifth and decisive set.
- With the score tied at 6-all in the fifth set, a service error by Lehigh ignited a 7-1 run that put Colgate at match point, 14-7. The Mountain Hawks would respond with three unanswered points to make it a 14-10 contest, but an attack error by Lehigh gave Colgate a 15-10 victory and the match.
 
Inside The Box Score
- The match featured a total of 25 ties and 10 lead changes. The third set featured the most in both categories (11 ties and four lead changes).
- Both teams were held below .200 hitting for the match as Colgate fashioned a team hitting percentage of .192 (57-25-167) while Lehigh combined for a .167 (57-29-168) attack clip.
- Ana Vrhel recorded six total blocks to lead all players in that category while senior Kenzie Hume notched five to pace the Raiders.

Cotterell Court Advantage Continues

Colgate improved to 3-0 at home this season and 21-6 at Cotterell Court since the start of the 2012 season with their victory over Lehigh.  The Raiders were 9-2 at home last season and 9-4 in Hamilton for the 2012 campaign.
