Seely paces Raiders against Eagles

Senior Diane Seely recorded nine kills, but American used a potent attack to record a 3-0 victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Diane Seely recorded nine kills and a .421 hitting percentage, but American cruised to a 3-0 (25-13, 25-22, 25-11) victory over Colgate in Patriot League volleyball action Saturday at Bender Arena.
 
Sarah Katz posted a match-high 12 kills and Erin Swartz notched nine spikes to power a potent Eagles attack that combined for 39 spikes and a .333 hitting percentage. Katz did not commit an error in 27 total attempts for a .444 hitting percentage while Swartz was charged with just one miscue in 14 tries. Monika Smidova dished out 29 assists and Megan Rosburg finished with 12 digs.
 
Seely ended the match with nine kills and just one attack error in 19 total attempts to pace Colgate. Junior Kate Reilly added six spikes in 17 swings with just error for a .294 attack clip. Freshman Molly Smith dished out 10 assists while fellow newcomer Elena Simpson added 14 digs.

- American remained undefeated in Patriot League play as they improved to 7-0 in conference play and 16-4 overall.

How It Happened
- American used a quick start in the first set, notching seven of the first eight points of the contest to take a 7-1 lead. The Eagles would not look back, leading by as many as 13 later in the set on its way to posting a 25-13 victory and a 1-0 lead.
- The second set saw the two teams battle back and forth for most of the frame as American held a 17-16 lead late in the frame when a service error by the Raiders sparked American to a 6-2 spurt and a 23-18 advantage. Colgate responded to the American run with a 4-1 spurt that pulled the Raiders within two, 24-22, but a service error gave the Eagles a 25-22 decision and a 2-0 advantage.
- In the third set, American held a 4-3 edge in the early going before the Eagles rattled off four unanswered points to spark an 8-1 run and take a 12-4 lead. American would cruise the rest of the frame, building its lead to as many as 14 as it posted a 25-11 victory and swept the match.

- The match featured a total of nine ties and four lead changes. Only one lead change occurred during the first and third sets.
- The Eagles committed just three attack errors combined during the first and third sets as they posted a cumulative .470 attack percentage in those two frames.
