Raiders Rally To Sink Mids, 3-2

HAMILTON – Sophomore Kathleen Harris recorded a match-high 17 kills and senior Diane Seely chipped in 14 to lead Colgate to a 3-2 victory over Navy in Patriot League volleyball action Friday at Cotterell Court.
 
Harris and Seely combined to record 31 of the Raiders' 57 kills in the match as juniors Brooke Shupryt-Knoop and Kate Reilly added six spikes each.  Harris also pitched in 21 digs to record her team-leading third double-double of the season.
Junior Jackie Macy also notched a double-double, finishing with a match-high 34 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Elena Simpson led all players with 27 digs. 
 
Sophomore Gaby Smith notched 16 kills and added 17 digs while freshman Maggie Phillips pitched in 12 kills for Navy. Junior Star Steele and freshman Rachel Fortner also posted double-doubles for the Mids with Steele notching 24 assists and 10 digs and Fortner finishing with 23 assists and 20 digs.

Won-Lost Records
- Playing its first home match since Aug. 29, Colgate picked up its first conference victory of the season as it moved to 1-2 in Patriot League and 7-6 on the season.
- Navy saw its league mark leveled at 2-2 as it dipped to 5-8 overall.
 
How It Happened
- Colgate took the first set, 25-19, as it closed out the frame with a 7-2 run that broke a 17-all tie and gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead in the match.
- Navy rebounded for a 25-20 victory in the second set as it broke a 15-15 deadlock with a 7-1 spurt on its way to r the match at 1-1.
- Colgate never trailed in the third set, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead before leading by as many as nine on its way to a 25-16 decision and a 2-1 margin.
- Navy battled back once again to tie the match as it built an early lead and held off a late Colgate rally for a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set.
- The Mids carried their momentum into the fifth set, jumping out to a quick 6-1 advantage on their way to building a 10-4 margin. The Raiders would battle back, notching four unanswered points to spark an 8-2 spurt and tie the match, 12-12.
- The two teams traded points over the next four plays until, with the score tied at 14-14, a service ace by freshman Molly Smith an a kill by junior Katie Fauntleroy gave Colgate a 16-14 victory and the match. 
 
Inside The Boxscore
- The match featured a total of 19 ties and six lead changes, the majority of which came in the first two sets (14 ties and five lead changes).
- Colgate posted a .375 hitting percentage in the third set as it posted 14 kills and just two attack errors on 32 attempts.
- Seely recorded seven total blocks to lead Colgate's blocking efforts while Katie Sylakowski finished with six to pace Navy.
 
Going The Distance
- Colgate improved to 3-1 this season in five-set matches with Friday's victory over Navy.
- The Raiders are 2-0 at home this season in five-set matches as it opened the campaign with a 3-2 triumph over Niagara on Aug. 29.
