HAMILTON – Colgate men's soccer dropped a hard-fought contest to nearby rival Cornell on Tuesday night, 1-0.
The Raiders saw the Big Red notch the eventual game-winner five minutes and 46 seconds into the opening 45 minutes to snag the one-goal victory.
Colgate earned a few quality chances on net, however, but weren't able to get one past the Cornell defense. One of those chances came with five minutes remaining in the game when the Big Red's Atticus DeProspo made a kick save off the goal line on a
Zach Tamen shot.
Nick Rizzo also recorded a great chance for the Raiders 15 minutes into the game. Off a through-ball from sophomore
Ethan Kutler, Rizzo volleyed a shot out of the air toward goal. Cornell's keeper Zach Zagorski made a diving save, though, to keep the junior out of the net.

Colgate Chances• The Raiders notched four solid opportunities on frame throughout the contest.
- After the Big Red took the 1-0 edge, Rizzo gave the Raiders a great look on net 15 minutes into the game when he ripped a volley toward goal. Kutler started the play by sending Rizzo a lifted through-ball. The junior then one-timed the ball on target but Cornell's goalie made a fantastic diving save to keep it a one-goal game.
- 10 minutes later it was again Kutler who started a Raider attack, this time off a free kick. The sophomore tried to bend an opportunity around the wall and on frame but again the Big Red keeper came up with the stop.
-
Jared Stroud earned another brilliant chance on goal for Colgate when he fired a hard-driven shot from just outside the top of the 18-yard box on goal. The rookie's attempt, however, just skimmed the crossbar and sailed over the net.
- Colgate's best chance at goal came with five minutes remaining in the game. Kutler sent a corner kick to the back of the box, where Tamen collected it. The sophomore took one touch before aiming a shot into the lower section of the goal. With the goalie beat, Tamen's shot looked to be heading in but Cornell's DeProspo came out of nowhere to save it off the goal line. Again stealing another chance away from the Raiders.
Straight From The Source•
Head Coach Erik Ronning: (On his team's tough 1-0 loss) "The guys fought hard. They stuck to our game plan and we created some opportunities. Cornell cleared one off the line late in the game or else the outcome would have been a little different."
"I'm really proud of the guys' effort though. Despite the result, every game we're getting better. We have a young group and they are growing every single day. If we continue to compete in that manner I believe there are still a lot of wins left for us this year as we move forward in the Patriot League schedule."
