HAMILTON – The Colgate men's cross country team opened up its season Saturday morning when it hosted the annual Harry Lang Invitational. The Raiders took third place overall in the meet.
"Today we had pretty good conditions and the guys ran well compared to where we've been training at, so I was very happy with the team's performance," Colgate assistant coach Luke Burdick said. "Going up against a couple of scholarship programs in Syracuse and Buffalo, it was pretty tough competition to start the year but that will only help prepare us. How we performed today was strong compaired to where we've been in the past.
"Our top guy Ben Aldrich had a good day. He's coming back from being an All-East performer last year at the IC4A. We knew he would be pretty strong this year and he seems to be running in form already, so that's great."
Junior Ben Aldrich finished Colgate's best runner taking 15th place by covering the 6,400 meters in 21 minutes, 28 seconds The Raiders added two more top-20 finishes when sophomore Chris Noda took 16th place with a time of 21:31 and senior Harry Englehart notched the 20th slot with a time of 21:42.50
Scott Walker and Cody Hawkins were the next Colgate finishers, placing 23rd and 24th with times of 21:54.90 and 21:56.00, respectively. Eric Moore (26th place), Troy Kelly (27th place), James Paris (28th place), and James Sheehy (30th palce) rounded out the Raiders scoring.
Syracuse claimed the men's team title after placing all but one of its runners in the top 11. Buffalo took second place, while Hartwick finished in fourth.
The individual champion was Syracuse sophomore Juris Silenieks, who crossed the finish line in a time of 20:33.
Colgate next competes at the Buffalo Invite on Sept. 21.
