Harris Tallies Double-Double Against LIU

Volleyball Fights to Fifth Set with Blackbirds

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Led by rookie Kathleen Harris' double-double, the Colgate women's volleyball team forced a fifth set with LIU Brooklyn, but the Raiders fell short in a 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12) loss on Saturday.

Colgate (5-3) saw Harris record 18 kills and 20 digs, while Kaylee Fifer fired up 53 assists and added 24 digs. Caitlin Cremin posted 21 digs and Allie Dyer added 20 as well. Diane Seely chipped in with 16 kills and five total blocks.

The Blackbirds (4-4) got 22 kills from Annika Foit in the win on a total of 67 attempts. Vera Djuric posted 58 assists, while Tamara Ignjic tallied 17 strikes.

In the first set, the Raiders found themselves down early and it was a five-point lead for the Blackbirds at 16-11. However, Colgate fought back with a short run to tie the match at 17-17 after kills from Young, Fifer and Seely. LIU Brooklyn then went on a run of its own and went up 24-19, but had trouble with the last point. The Raiders got back in the set with strikes by Reilly and Hume to cut the lead to one at 24-23, but Tamara Ignjic won the set with a kill to make it 25-23. 

The Raiders rebounded in the second set with a 6-1 run that opened up a 15-10 lead with an ace from Harris and kills from Kenzie Hume and Seely. Colgate held onto that lead for the rest of the match, but the Blackbirds gave the Raiders a scare after cutting the advantage down to 23-21. Head coach Ryan Baker called timeout to calm things down and it worked as Seely and Harris connected on back-to-back strikes to win 25-21.

LIU Brooklyn opened up an early 14-4 lead in the third game and never squandered the advantage and went on to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-21 win.

The fourth set with an exciting one with Colgate earning the early lead, but the Blackbirds fired back to tie the game at 10-10. The Raiders took the momentum as Madison McAndrews and Harris accounted for a couple of points with an ace and a kill, respectively. Thanks to those points, Colgate had an 18-14 lead and added to it with a short 6-2 run to increase the advantage to 24-18. The Raiders closed out the set and won 25-21 to force a fifth set.

The deciding set was a close one with teams trading points until LIU got a small two-point lead at 9-7. Colgate got one back with a kill from Harris, but the Blackbirds responded with three-straight points to build a 12-8 lead. The Raiders were able to get back to within two, but LIU finished the match with a 15-12 win.
