HAMILTON – The Colgate women's volleyball team had on its best hitting nights of the season in a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) sweep of Albany in a midweek match at Cotterell Court on Wednesday night.
Colgate (13-6) hit over 25 percent as a team and was led by
Diane Seely, who posted 14 kills and hit 50 percent, while also getting a pair of blocks.
Kenzie Hume recorded 11 kills and it is the third time in the last five matches she reached double digits.
Kaylee Fifer added 36 assists, while
Caitlin Cremin had a match-high 19 digs and the Raiders got 16 digs from
Kathleen Harris.
The Great Danes (3-15) struggled hitting the ball as Colgate held them to a hitting percentage of .056. Samantha Brostrom and Amanda Dolan were the team leaders in kills with six apiece. Viktoriia Stroilo had 17 digs in the loss and Mikala McCauley added 19 assists.
Albany came out sluggish in the first five points with Colgate earning a 4-1 lead, but the Great Danes fired back and took an 11-9 lead with a 7-1 run. Seely got the Raiders back on track with three kills during a run of 6-2 to give Colgate a 15-13 lead. The Raiders never looked back from the run and scored six of the final seven points to earn the 25-18 win in the first set.
Lindsay Young and Hume had two kills each during the final stretch.
The second set was a continuation of the opening game as Colgate jumped out to a 15-6 lead. The advantage got out of hand thanks to a 13-2 run from the Raiders. Seely was on fire with three kills in the first seven points of the run and added a block. Colgate also got a lot of help from the Great Danes with seven errors out of the 13 points. Albany tried to chip away at the lead and got it down to 18-15, but The Raiders stayed in control and won the set at 25-20 on a kill from Harris after a block by Humes and
Mari Faines.
Colgate kept the heat on in the third set after the long 10-minute rest between sets. Hume led the way with four kills to build a 16-8 lead.
Kate Reilly added three kills, while Seely and Young had two apiece. The Great Danes made one last gasp and cut the advantage to three at 16-13 with five-straight points, but Colgate closed out the match with a 25-17 win with Young putting it away with her ninth kill of the night.
Colgate is back in action on Friday night at 7 p.m. as the Raiders return to league play at Bucknell.
