HAMILTON, N.Y. (3/12/12) – The No. 17 Colgate men's lacrosse team will continue its two-game road swing when it travels to Vestal, N.Y. for a matchup against Binghamton on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 3 p.m.
The Raiders are coming off their first Patriot League win of the season on Saturday, defeating Holy Cross 13-9 in Worcester, Mass. Freshman
Ryan Walsh led the way with five points from four goals and one assist. He was followed by junior
Peter Baum, who also had five points from three goals and two assists. Behind them were sophomore
Brendon McCann and junior
Matt Baker who had three points apiece. McCann had two goals and one assist while Baker had one goal and two helpers.
POINT LEADERS
Peter Baum continues to lead the team with 35 points from 26 goals and nine assists. The junior, who is ranked in the top 10- nationally for his 33-game point streak, is also ranked 12th amongst active players with 89 career goals, which is also tied for ninth in program history for career goals. Ryan Walsh and senior co-captain
Jeff Ledwick. Walsh is second with 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points while Ledwick has 18 points from 13 goals and five helpers.
NATIONAL STATISTICS
Peter Baum has made his mark not just in the league, where he is first in points per game, goals per game and shots per game, but nationally. He leads the nation in goals per game (4.33) and in points per game (5.83). He is not the only Raider making his mark in the national statistics. Junior
Robert Grabher is ranked sixth in groundballs per game (7.17) and senior co-captain
Kevin Gordon is 15th in the nation in caused turnovers per game (2.17).
As a team, Colgate (5-1, 1-0 PL) is ranked in the top-10 nationally in six categories. The team is second in caused turnovers per game (11.83), fourth in scoring offense (13.50), sixth in groundballs per game (35.83), seventh in points per game (20.83) and in win percentage (.833), and is eighth in scoring margin (4.50).
WALSH EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT PL WEEKLY AWARD
Rookie
Ryan Walsh was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the second straight week after his performance in the team's wins over Hobart and Holy Cross last week. The rookie, who earned the previous week's rookie award for his contribution to the team's 24-14 win over Robert Morris on Mar. 3, collected a total of eight points in the two games last week. Walsh first tallied his second career hat trick for three points in the Raiders' 18-8 win over Hobart on Tuesday before leading his team to its first league win over Holy Cross with five points from four goals and one assist on Saturday.
SERIES
Colgate leads the all-time series 7-2 since the teams first met in 2003. The Raiders have lost the last two meetings of the series, falling to Binghamton 7-6 in both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. Colgate has a 3-1 record in Vestal, N.Y. against the Bearcats, with its last road win coming in the 2008 season, 9-7.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats (2-2) are coming off a 9-7 win over Siena last week, breaking a two-game losing streak. Sophomore midfielder Michael Antinozzi scored a career-high five goals in the game. The team, which is undefeated at home with a 2-0 record, won its season opener against Lafayette 10-8 before going on to drop its next two games to No. 3 Cornell and Hobart 17-12 and 15-10 respectively.
Binghamton is led by America East Player of the Week Michael Antinozzi and junior Tyler Perrelle. Antinozzi has a team-high 17 points from 15 goals and two assists while Perrelle is second with eight goals and five assists for 13 points. Following them are senior John Clark and sophomore Brandon Planck who both have six points apiece. Clark has five goals and one assist while Planck has four goals and two helpers. Leading the way in net is freshman Colin Nesdale who has played in three games and started in two. He has a 12.55 goals against average and a total of 30 saves for a .517 save percentage.
RAIDERS RETURN TO NATIONAL POLLS
The Colgate men's lacrosse team reclaimed its place in the national rankings this week, securing the No. 17 spots in both the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll and the USILA Coaches' Poll. The Raiders, who are now on a three-game winning streak, found their way back into the national rankings after securing a 18-8 win over Hobart on Tuesday and a 13-9 win over Holy Cross on Saturday, both last week. Prior to the two wins last week, the team secured its first win of the streak 24-14 over Robert Morris on Mar. 3.
Colgate began the season ranked No. 19 in the Nike/Inside Preseason Poll that was released in January. The team also received votes in the USILA Preseason Poll but was unable to break into the top 20. The Raiders also landed the No. 18 and 20 spots in the Inside Lacrosse 2012 Face-Off Yearbook Rankings.
