Rolls Three Lifts Colgate Past Navy 59-57

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (2/18/12) – Junior guard Mitch Rolls drained a three-pointer with 1.5 seconds remaining to lift the Colgate men's basketball team past Navy 59-57 Saturday night at Alumni Hall.

Colgate (8-19, 2-10) led 56-51 with 44 seconds left in regulation, but Isaiah Roberts responded with five points, including a layup with eight seconds remaining to put the Mids up 57-56, before Rolls ended the scoring with his second three-pointer of the game.

Rolls finished the game with 13 points, three assists and two rebounds to lead the Raiders. While senior guard Mike Venezia became the 29th Raider to score 1,000-points, with 11. Senior Forward Sterling Melville finished with seven points and three assists, while Brandon James had seven points and five rebounds.  

Colgate opened the game with a 13-7 run, including back-to-back three pointers from Venezia, with 15:21 left. The Mids then responded with an 8-2 run to tie the game 15-15 with 9:49 remaining. But the Raiders were able to answer back with a 12-6 run to build a 27-21 lead, before taking a 29-25 lead into the locker room during intermission. Venezia led all scores with 11 points in the first half.

Navy (3-23, 0-12) opened the second half with a 9-4 run to take the lead 34-33 with 15:48 remaining, but Colgate answered back with a 9-0 run, including a three-pointer from Rolls, to give the Raiders a 42-34 lead with 11:49 left. Colgate would maintain the lead the for until Roberts made his layup in the closing seconds.

Navy was led by Jordan Sugars who finished with a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds, while Roberts pitched in 18 points and three assists.

Colgate shot 58.6 percent from the field, including 60 percent from behind the arc, while holding Navy to 39 percent overall and 33.3 percent from downtown. The Raiders also won the battle on the boards 25-22, but committed 17 turnovers that resulted in 13 points.

Colgate will continue Patriot League play when it visits Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 22. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Kirby Sports Center and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.
