HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/17/12) – The Colgate women's hockey team experienced a 6-0 setback to No. 10 St. Lawrence in ECAC Hockey play on Friday night in Starr Rink.
Senior goaltender
Kimberly Sass had 30 saves in the game in which the Saints held a 36-17 shooting advantage. The loss ended the Raiders' chance of securing a spot in the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey Playoffs that will begin next weekend.
St. Lawrence came out to an early lead, scoring the opening goal of the game just 60 seconds into play to take a 1-0 lead. As the period progressed, the Saints continued to put pressure on Colgate's (10-20-2, 5-14-2 ECAC Hockey) net but then an injury on one of their players cooled off their early momentum. After a brief break, during which St. Lawrence's player received treatment on the ice, the Raiders became the more attacking team as they looked for an early equalizer to keep them in the game. Midway through the stanza, the Saints then found their attacking rhythm once again with the first power play opportunity of the game, but were held scoreless. Colgate found its closest opportunity of the frame during the extra skater opportunity, almost finding a short-handed goal from senior co-captain
Amanda Kirwan, but her shot went just wide. St. Lawrence then went on another power play minutes later that soon became a 5-on-3 advantage for the Saints but they could not capitalize once again. Both teams continued to play an attacking game in the final five minutes of the period, with St. Lawrence hitting the pipe at one point, but at the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the score remained 1-0 in favor of the Saints.
Colgate carried a 5-on-3 extra skater opportunity into the second period courtesy of a late penalty on St. Lawrence in the final two minutes of the first frame and a bench penalty at the beginning of the second. Despite their determination to score, the Raiders could not find the back of the net. The Saints however, were then able to extend their lead to two goals with a power play tally at the 8:29 mark to put the score at 2-0. Shortly after, Colgate then went on an extra skater advantage, firing a series of shots at net in an attempt to find its first goal but could not break its dry spell. St. Lawrence then struck again with a third goal during a delayed penalty on the Raiders to improve its lead to 3-0 with just 6:41 left in the stanza. The Saints then scored a fourth goal in the closing minutes to take a 4-0 lead going into the final period.
St. Lawrence then went on to score a pair of goals at the 40 second and the 8:25 marks to eventually secure a 6-0 shutout win over Colgate.
Kimberly Sass had 30 saves while Carmen MacDonald had 17 stops for the Saints. Colgate was held scoreless on its four extra skater opportunities while St. Lawrence went 1-for-5 on the power play.
The Raiders will conclude their 2011-12 season tomorrow (Feb.18) afternoon when they host Clarkson at 4 p.m. in Starr Rink. The team will honor its four seniors
