John Brandenburg scored a career-high 17 points, including six in overtime, as the Colgate men's basketball team captured its first Patriot League win of the season 65-54 over Navy Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court. The win also snapped an eight game losing streak for the Raiders.
Colgate (6-13, 1-4) trailed by as much as 11 in the second half, before trimming the lead four, 49-45, with 1:46 remaining in regulation. Senior
Mike Venezia then drained a three-pointer with 1:26 remaining to bring the Raiders within a point, but Worth Smith responded with a three of his own with 46 ticks left to almost seal the win for Navy (3-16, 0-5). Brandenburg then split a pair of free throws, to make the score 52-49 with 26 seconds left, but grabbed his own offensive rebound to keep the ball with Colgate. After a 20 second timeout
Mitch Rolls connected from downtown to tie the game 52-52 with seven seconds left. After a Navy timeout with three seconds remaining the Mids couldn't inbound the ball giving the Raiders the last shot in regulation. Rolls tried another three-pointer, but saw this one bounce off the back iron to keep the score tied.
The Raiders then dominated the overtime session scoring 12-straight points, including six from Brandenburg, to build the largest lead of the game 64-52 with a minute remaining. Brandenburg also recorded two blocked shots in overtime to help keep the Mids off the scoreboard. Jordan Brickman made the only basket for Navy in overtime with 44 seconds left and Venezia split a pair of free throws to make the final 65-54.
Brandenburg recorded his career-high by shooting 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-8 from the charity stripe, while Venezia pitched in 13 points and Rolls added nine. Freshman
Luke Roh had another solid game with seven points, two in overtime, six rebounds and three assists, while Melville finished with six points and seven rebounds. Rolls also led the team with four assists, which moved him up to seventh all-time at Colgate with 252 helpers.
Navy opened the game with a 13-7 run, before Colgate responded with a 9-0 run, including back-to-back layups by Brandenburg, to give the Raiders a 16-13 lead with 11:22 remaining. Both teams then exchanged a couple of baskets, before the Mids closed the half with a 15-6 run to take a 30-24 lead into the locker room.
The Mids then extended their lead to 41-30, with an 11-6 run to start the second half before the Raiders responded with a 14-5 run over the next eight minutes, including a thunderous dunk by Brandenburg, to make the score 46-44. Navy stretched its lead back to five 49-44 with 2:20 left, before Colgate battled back to force overtime.
J.J. Avila finished with a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Navy, while Brandon Venturini and Donya Jackson each scored 11 points, respectively.
Colgate shot 53.5 percent from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 in overtime, while holding Navy to 36.2 percent overall and just 1-of-9 in the extra session. Navy won the battle on the boards 37-36, but Colgate distributed eight more assists in the game and blocked five shots as a team to help secure the win.
The Raiders will host Lafayette on Wednesday, Jan. 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Cotterell Court and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.
