Women's Basketball Drops 61-54 Decision to Army

HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/18/12) – Junior guard Jhazmine Lynch scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Colgate women's basketball team fell to Army 61-54 Wednesday night at Cotterell Court.

Senior Tricia Oakes also pitched in 12 points and eight rebounds for the Raiders, while Lauryn Kobiela and Kelly Korkowski both scored six. Kobiela also had three assists and one blocked shot in the game.

Army (9-10, 3-1) opened the game with an 8-0 run in the first three minutes of action, before the Raiders responded with an 11-3 run to tie the score at 11 with 12 minutes remaining. Both teams then exchanged baskets for the next four minutes, until the Black Knights pieced together an 11-4 run to build a seven point lead 25-18 with five minutes left. But the Raiders closed the half with a 9-4 run, including a three-pointer from Mariah Jones, to trim Army's lead to 29-27 as both teams entered their locker rooms.

Colgate (4-15, 1-3) scored the first four points of the second half to take the lead 31-29 with 18:46 remaining, but the Black Knights responded with a 14-2 run to build their largest lead of the game 43-33 with 12:24 left. The Raiders then answered back with a 7-0 run to make the score 43-40 with 10:20 remaining in regulation, but the Black Knights responded with five-straight points to lead 48-40 with 8:20 left. Colgate would trim the Army lead to 48-45 after a three-pointer from Candice Green, but the Black Knights wouldn't give up their lead as Jen Hazlett drained a three-pointer to help put Army back up by eight 53-45 with 6:15 remaining. But Colgate wouldn't go down easy as the Raiders made eight-straight free-throws over the next five minutes, including two from Oakes with 1:41 left in regulation to trim the Black Knights led to 55-53. But that was as close a the score would get as Army ended the game with a 6-1 run.

Anna Simmers who scored a game-high 22 points led Army, while Hazlett record a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Army finished the game shooting 32.8 percent, while holding Colgate to just 30 percent, and won the battle on the boards by a slim margin 45-44. The Black Knights did connect on 26 percent of their three point attempts, while Colgate only made 16.7 percent. Army also forced 16 Colgate turnovers that resulted in 14 points.

The Raiders will travel to Annapolis, Md. on Saturday, Jan. 21 to face Navy. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall and will be streamed live on Patriot League All-Access.
