Raider Chat with Will Delano

Will Delano with head coach Keith Tyburski
Colgate University men's golf assistant captain Will Delano took time from his summer events to discuss everything from battling back from injury to his personal goals for this upcoming season.

Delano, who was named the 2010-11 Colgate men's golf team MVP, led the Raiders to their second-straight title at the Colgate Invitational last fall. Delano fired a team and season-low round of 143 (68-75) at Seven Oaks to win the individual title. Delano was also named to the 2011 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

On balancing Division I athletics at Colgate ... “Balancing academics and athletics is difficult at Colgate. For golf we have to miss a lot of classes for weekend tournaments so it can be easy to fall behind but fortunately due to the weather and the short seasons in both the fall and spring, we have a lot of free time to catch up and focus on school.”

On being named an assistant team captain ... “I was pleased when I heard I was named assistant captain because I care a lot about the team. I am excited for the responsibility of being one of the leaders on the team and helping us improve.”

On battling back from a car accident during the 2010-11 season … “The car accident was difficult because I had done a lot of work getting ready for the season and then all of a sudden I had to miss almost the entire spring. I was a bit rusty when I was able to play again but I have been playing a lot and improving since then so I am excited for this season.”

On what he's doing this summer … “This summer I have been playing a lot of golf and competing in as many tournaments as I can play in.“

On setting team and personal goals for the upcoming season ... “I have high hopes for this season both personally and as a team. Last year was difficult because we had a small team and we had problems with injuries. This year we have some good recruits coming in so our team will be much deeper which is important. Fortunately our season opener is on our home course so hopefully we can defend our title and start the year off on a good note.”
