Raiders Travel to Navy for Patriot League Matchup

– The Colgate men's lacrosse team will travel to Annapolis, Md. for a Patriot League matchup against Navy on Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m. This will be the Raiders' second league game of the season.

Colgate (5-3, 1-0 PL) is coming off an 11-9 road win over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Peter Baum led the Raiders in scoring with four goals while senior Andrew Mould had three and sophomore Matt Baker had two. Juniors Jeff Ledwick and Kevin Gordon also added one goal apiece.

SENIORS' CONTRIBUTION

The seniors are already showing their leadership on the field, contributing a significant number of the Raiders' 109 points this season. As a class they collectively have 39 points from 25 of the team's 75 goals and 14 of its 34 assists.

TEAM LEADERS

Baum, who leads the league in goals per game (2.88), continues to lead the team in scoring with 28 points from 23 goals and five assists. He is 18th in the nation in points per game and is ranked sixth in goals per game. Baum is followed by Mould who has 13 goals and one assist for 14 points. Senior co-captain Rob Bosco and classmate McCabe are tied at third with nine points. Bosco has four goals and five assists while McCabe has seven goals and two assists.

TOP BOSS

Colgate University head coach Jim Nagle is in his 10th season at the helm of the Colgate lacrosse program. He sports an 80-62 record and is 145-101 in his career as a head coach. His 80 victories have him tied at first for most wins by a Colgate men's lacrosse coach. Harvey Potter (1955-65) also has 80 victories.

THE SERIES

Navy leads the all-time series, owning an 11-3 record against the Raiders since the teams first met in 1928. Colgate's only wins were in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The team has a 1-4 record on the road against the Midshipmen, with the Raiders' only road win coming in the 2009 season when they defeated Navy 10-9 in Annapolis, Md.

SCOUTING NAVY

The Midshipmen (4-4, 2-2 PL) are coming off an 8-3 win over Holy Cross on Saturday. The team, which was picked to finish second in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, also has wins over VMI, Lafayette and Towson and has suffered losses to Loyola (Md.), North Carolina, Lehigh and Bucknell.

Navy is led by freshmen Sam Jones and Tucker Hull as well as senior Andy Warner. Jones, who is second in the league in points per game (3.62), leads the Mids in points with 29 from a team-high 19 goals and 10 assists. He is followed by Hull who has 15 goals and 13 assists for 28 points while Warner, who is second in the league in assists per game (2.00), also has 28 points off 12 goals and 16 assists. The team also has help from this week's Patriot League Rookie of the Week, Harrison Chaires, who leads the league in man-up goals (0.75).

PATRIOT LEAGUE PRESEASON POLL

Colgate was selected to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll that was released on Jan. 26. Defending champion, Army, was picked to finish first with 78 points and 12 first-place votes. Following the Black Knights was last season's runner-up, Navy, with 58 points and one first-place vote and Bucknell with 51 points and one-first place vote as well. The Raiders rounded out the top four with 39 points, while Lehigh (31), Lafayette (30) and Holy Cross (13) had the final three spots. Army seniors Jeremy Boltus and Bill Henderson were selected as the Patriot League Preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year.

PL WEEKLY AWARDS
The Raiders have had one player receive one of the major weekly awards and three players receive an honorable mention in the Patriot League Weekly Awards. Junior Jared Madison was named the Goalkeeper of the Week on March 14 while senior Dave Tucciarone received an honorable mention. Baum also received an honorable mention from the league on March 21 and then two weeks in a row on March 7 and Feb. 28 while senior Jim Carroll was given an honorable mention on March 7.

BAUM ON TEWAARATON AWARD WATCH LIST

Baum was recently named to the 2011 Tewaaraton Award watch list. This annual list is made up of the top lacrosse players across all three divisions of collegiate lacrosse and highlights the early hopefuls for the 2011 Tewaaraton Award honors. The Tewaaraton Award was formally established in August of 2000 by The University Club of Washington, D.C. and is the pre-eminent lacrosse award, which is awarded annually to the NCAA male and female lacrosse players of the year.
