WEST POINT, N.Y. (2/5/11)
– Sophomore guard Mitch Rolls scored a career-high 23 points, including 16 in the second half to help lead Colgate to a 77-71 win over Army Saturday afternoon at Christal Arena. The win was the first for the Raiders in West Point since the 2008-09 season.

After leading by as much as 13 in the second half (68-55) the Raiders began to see their lead slip away as the Black Knights scored nine straight points to make the score 68-64. But a three pointer from Rolls as the shot clock expired in the final minute of regulation brought an end to Army's run to secure the win.

“This was a total team win,” stated head coach Emmett Davis. “We got strong performances from a number of players. We shot the ball very well and scored in a variety of ways.”

Rolls finished the day with a game high 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting and seven assists, while senior captain Joe Hoban scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Junior Mike Venezia also reached double digits with 14 points, while freshman Pat Moore scored eight.

“Our guard play was very solid accounting for 65 points with 12 assists and just six turnovers,” said Davis.

Colgate (6-17, 3-5) built a 16-11 lead through the first seven minutes of action and maintained a 21-19 lead with 6:15 remaining. But the Black Knights went on a 20-8 run to take a 39-29 lead. Hoban then made a three pointer with three seconds left to make the score 39-32 at halftime. Venezia led the Raiders in the first half with 10 points.

The Raiders then carried the momentum from Hoban's three pointer into the second half as they opened with an 11-3 run. Hoban capped the run by tipping in a rebound off a missed jumper by Venezia to give them the lead 43-42. Colgate then added to its lead as Rolls caught fire scoring 12 points in the first 11 minutes to make the score 60-52 with nine minutes left. The Raiders continued to pour it on after a nice reverse layup by Hoban made the score 68-55 with just over four minutes remaining. But Army was able to score the next nine points to trim the lead to 68-64 with 2:17 left. After a Hoban layup and free throw by Cartavious Kincade made the score 70-65, Rolls then drained his three pointer which seamed to seal the win.

“We came out of the locker room after halftime with great energy and were able to reclaim the lead,” stated head coach Emmett Davis. “We really shared the ball and our defense and rebounding were much more focused.”

Army (11-12, 3-5) was led by Ella Ellis who scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jeremy Hence pitched in 13 points with nine boards.

Colgate shot 51 percent (28-of-55) in the game and 58 percent (10-of-17) from three-point range, while holding Army to just 38 percent (25-of-66) for the game, and 28 percent (10-of-35) in the second half. Army did win the rebound battle 42-36, but the battle was tied 23-23 in the second half.

Colgate will host Lafayette on Wednesday, Feb. 9. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be live on Patriot League All-Access.
