HAMILTON, N.Y. (2/4/11) – The Colgate men's hockey team was shutout for the first time this season and St. Lawrence used three power play goals to defeat the Raiders, 4-0, on Friday night at Starr Rink.
Colgate (3-22-2, 0-13-2 ECAC) went 0-for-5 on the power play, while
Eric Mihalik did his best to keep the Raiders in the game with 22 stops between the pipes in the loss.
St. Lawrence (8-13-3, 4-9-1 ECAC) got two goals from Nick Pitsikoulis and a pair of points by George Hughes on a goal and an assist. Pat Raley chipped in with two assists on the night and Robby Moss earned his third win of the year with 24 saves.
St. Lawrence struck first on its only power play chance of the first period. Colgate did a good job killing off the penalty, but with three seconds left, Kyle Flanagan netted his ninth of the year. Hughes was at the top of the slot and found Flanagan at the right circle and he mishit the puck, but somehow it fluttered past Mihalik for the 1-0 lead. Pat Raley was also given an assist on the goal.
The Saints added another just over a minute later when Pitsikoulis fired a harmless shot from the point that skimmed high over the defense and beat Mihalik top shelf. The goal came unassisted and St. Lawrence had a 2-0 lead at the end of one period.
Hughes increased the lead to 3-0 in the second period with the team's second power play goal of the night for the Saints. The tally came with 11:43 left in the frame. Raley received a pass from Greg Carey behind the net and his slid the puck out to Hughes, who let the bodies pile up in front and took a shot. The biscuit had eyes and Mihalik didn't see it as the puck hit the net. Raley and Carey were rewarded with assists.
St. Lawrence closed out the scoring with 1:50 left in the game with its third man advantage goal of the game. Pitsikoulis tallied his second of the night after being set up nicely by Jared Keller. It took the Saints just five seconds into the power play to score their fourth of the night. Bob Torney slid the puck to Keller and he spotted Pitsikoulis at the opposite dot and he didn't miss on the one-timer to make it 4-0.
The Saints outshot the Raiders 26-24 and went 3-for-5 on the man advantage.
The Raiders will be back at it tomorrow night as Clarkson comes to town for a 7 p.m. faceoff, which will be shown live on Time Warner Sports in central New York.
