BURLINGTON, VT. (2/20/11) – The Colgate men's lacrosse team dropped its second game of the season when it fell to Vermont 9-4 on Sunday afternoon. Three early goals from the Catamounts in the first seven minutes of play, helped them maintain their lead and push past the Raiders.
Senior co-captain
Andrew Mould scored twice for the second game in a row while freshman
Brendon McCann and sophomore
Michael Thomas had one goal each.
The Catamouts came out to an explosive start, winning the first faceoff and finding their first goal just 1:22 into play from Drew Philie to take the 1-0 lead. Still carrying their momentum from the first goal, Vermont then fired a pair of shots and found the net once again at the 3:11 mark courtesy of Geoff Worley to take a 2-0 advantage. Colgate (0-2) then attempted to get on the scoreboard firing a couple of shots at its opponent's net but three minutes later, it was the Catamounts that found a third goal to extend their lead. Feeling the pressure of the three-goal deficit, the Raiders picked up their intensity and found their first goal from Mould at the 7:49 mark to put the score at 3-1. With a goal in their pocket, Colgate continued to search for a second to reduce the scoring margin, but at the 12:16 mark it was Vermont that found the net from Philie once again to take the 4-1 lead. Not discouraged, the Raiders continued to work hard and were rewarded 73 seconds later with a second goal from Mould with help from sophomore
Peter Baum at the 13:29 mark to put the score at 4-2 at the end of the first 15 minutes of play.
With a fruitful first period that consisted of a total of six goals, both teams were determined to carry their scoring momentum into the second quarter. This time it was Colgate that struck first, taking advantage of an offside penalty given to Vermont in the first two minutes to score its first man-up goal of the season from Thomas at the 2:16 mark to reduce the scoring margin to just one goal. McCann was awarded with an assist. Both teams continued to play hard but it was the Catamounts that created majority of the scoring opportunities, eventually finding success at the 8:29 mark from Philie to give them a 5-3 advantage. Vermont then found the net again three minutes later to take the 6-3 lead, which they held until half time.
The Raiders then went on to score the lone goal of the third period courtesy of McCann to put the score at 6-4. However, three unanswered goals from Vermont in the final period resulted in the Catamounts winning the game 9-4.
