HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (2/15/11) – The Colgate men's lacrosse team experienced its first setback of the season when it fell to No. 9/10 Hofstra 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
Senior co-captain
Andrew Mould scored twice for the Raiders while freshman
Brendon McCann scored one goal.
Colgate (0-1) got off to a good start, winning the first faceoff and firing the first shot on goal just under three minutes into the game. Hofstra soon returned the favor, creating an opportunity of its own at the 11:44 mark but could not get past junior
Jared Madison. The teams continued to play hard with the Raiders firing a second shot minutes later, but at the 6:29 mark it was the Pride that found the first goal from Brad Loizeaux to take the 1-0 lead that lasted throughout the first quarter.
The second period started off similar to the first with Colgate making the first play on net. The Raiders then continued to attack Hofstra's goal aggressively and were rewarded at the 9:05 mark when McCann picked up a pass from junior
Patrick Campbell and fired it into the net to tie the game at 1-1. The Pride then answered back with four goals in the final five minutes of play to end the second quarter with a 5-1 advantage.
Colgate then attempted to reduce the four–goal deficit first with an unassisted goal from Mould at the 10:08 mark in the third period followed by another goal from Mould at the 11:27 mark in the final period to put the score at 5-3. However, a sixth and final goal from Hofstra in the closing minutes of the game solidified the 6-3 win for the Pride. Sophomore
Peter Baum was credited with an assist in Mould's second goal.
Madison had seven saves for the Raiders while Hofstra's Andrew Gvozden had eight.
The team will resume play this weekend when it travels to Burlington, Vt. for a matchup against Vermont on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m.
