ITHACA, N.Y. (11/15/11) – The Colgate women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Cornell 59-56 Tuesday night at Newman Arena. Junior guard
Jhazmine Lynch led the Raiders with a game-high 17 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Colgate (0-2) got 11 points and eight rebounds from
Tricia Oakes, while
Mariah Jones was in double-digits for the second time in as many games to start her collegiate career with 10 points. Jones' classmate
Kelly Reid provided energy off the bench with six points and six rebounds.
Oakes got the game started with a layup from Jones to put the Raiders on the board first, as Colgate maintained its lead for the the entire first half. But Cornell was well in the game, as the lead never grew greater than five points. The Raiders went into the locker room with a 25-23 lead, as Oakes finished with nine points, six rebounds, and a blocked shot.
Lynch got the second half started as she scored five straight points to extend the lead to 30-23. Cornell battled back and with 13:33 left in play the Big Red took their first lead of the game 34-33, but its lead wouldn't last long as Reid made a pair of free throws, after grabbing an offensive board, put the Raiders back up 35-34. The teams would battle throughout the rest of the half with no team wanting to take advantage of mistakes. Maka Anyanwu got a three-point play the old fashion way and put Cornell up 46-43 with 5:31 remaining. But the Raiders responded with a 8-0 run to make the score 51-46 with 3:31 remaining. But just like Colgate, the Big Red responded with 11-5 run to take a 57-56 lead with 29 seconds. A tough lay-up from Lynch rattled in and out, and the Raiders had no choice but to foul. Cornell's Stephanie Long hit two free throws to extend the lead to 59-56 with 14 seconds to play. Colgate's last hope to send the game into extra minutes went out the window when a three from
Candice Green bounced off the front iron.
After the shooting 58 percent form behind the arc in the season opener, Colgate was held to 1-of-9 shooting from three point range against the Big Red, also shooting 7-of-13 from the charity stripe.
Colgate will travel to take part in the University of Vermont women's basketball tournament this weekend. The Raiders first game will be against the host, Vermont on Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m.
