HAMILTON, N.Y. (1/8/11) – Junior forward
Yaw Gyawu (Lilburn, Ga.) and senior captain
Joe Hoban (West Chester, Pa.) combine for 30 points but it wasn't enough as Colgate dropped its Patriot League opener to Army 73-66 Saturday afternoon at Cotterell Court.
The loss snapped a six game winning streak for Colgate in league openers against Army and is the first league opening loss for the Raiders since the 2003-04 season.
Gyawu finished the day with 16 points and seven rebounds to lead the Raiders, while Hoban pitched in 14 points and four steals. Sophomore point guard
Mitch Rolls (Coffeyville, Kan.) and junior forward
Sterling Melville (Plano, Texas) each score nine points, while junior center
Nick Pascale (DeWitt, N.Y.) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
After trailing by as much as 17 in the second half Colgate (1-13, 0-1) made a 12-0 run to trim the Black Knights lead to 61-59 with 3:57 remaining. Rolls, who didn't play in the first half, sparked the run with a pair of three pointers, while Melville pitched in five points including a thunderous dunk that brought the crowd to its feet. However after a media timeout Army's Julian Simmons made a three pointer and was fouled in the act of doing so to complete a four-point play to give the Black Knights the lead for good 65-59.
Army (9-7, 1-0) opened the game with a 14-7 run through the first eight minutes of action, but Colgate was able to answer back with a run of its own to tie the game 16-16 with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Black Knights then took control of the game with a 24-9 run to end the half with a 40-25 lead.
Jeremy Hence led Army with a game-high 23 points while Simmons pitched in 20.
Colgate will travel to Lafayette on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be live on Patriot League All-Access.
