Women's Hoops Hands Navy its First Conference Loss 59-55

Colgate handed Navy its first league loss this season while improving to 2-5 in league play

– The Colgate women's basketball team secured is second Patriot League win while handing Navy its first league loss this season, when it defeated the Mids 59-55 on Saturday night in Annapolis, Md.

Senior Tayler Wejnert recorded her first double-double of the season, leading the team with 19 points, 11 rebounds and three steals while sophomore Jhazmine Lynch had 14 points and six rebounds. Senior Sami Kozlowski reached the 1,000 career-point mark with eight points in the game.

Colgate (7-14, 2-5) got off to a strong start, hitting a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to take the 5-2 lead after three minutes of play. The Mids answered back with a three-pointer of their own, to tie the score at 5-5. For the next two minutes, both teams struggled to find a basket until Navy went on a 6-4 run to put the score at 11-7 at the 12:52 mark. The Raiders then went on a run of their own to tie the score at 11-11 just over a minute later. The teams continued to trade baskets throughout the half, but as the it came to a close, Navy was able to gain the lead and extend the scoring margin to as much as 10 points, eventually settling with a 27-19 advantage at half time.

The second half started similar to the first, with Colgate getting on the scoreboard first with five quick points to put the score 27-23 at the 18:28 mark. The Mids attempted to answer back with a basket of their own, but the Raiders were soon able to rally back and take a 30-29 lead two minutes later. Colgate then extended its lead to four points with a three-pointer from Wejnert, holding the advantage for three minutes until the 12:06 mark when Navy finally found a basket to put the score at 33-31. The game remained close with the Raiders holding a slight advantage throughout the half. With just five minutes left to play, Colgate began to extend its lead, first by six points and then by eight at the 3:32 mark. The Mids were not defeated yet, closing the gap to just three points in the last minute of play. However, in the end the Raiders proved to be the stronger team, holding their lead and eventually winning the game 59-55.

“I am so happy for the team,” stated head coach Pamela Bass. “We knew we were getting the shots we wanted in the first half but just didn't finish. In the second half we got the same looks and hit them.

"The start of the second half really set the tone for the game. We executed on both ends of the floor, especially the boards. This was a great confidence boost for our team and a special congratulations to Sami for joining the 1,000 point club.”

Colgate had a 43.8 field goal percentage, going 6-24 in the first half and 15-24 in the second. The team also shot 63.6 percent from the charity stripe and was 10-of-15 from beyond the arch.

The Raiders will resume play next week when they travel to West Point, N.Y. for a matchup against Army on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m.
