Colgate (5-9) got off to an early lead with a 5-0 run in the first two minutes of the game. The Falcons finally answered back with a jumper at the 18:10 mark to give them their first two points of the game. The teams continued to exchange baskets, with Air Force being the more productive of the two, and with 14 minutes left in the half, the Falcons took the 11-9 lead. Air Force was then able to extend its lead slightly, but this advantage was short lived with the Raiders regaining the lead just three minutes later. Both teams continued to battle it out on the court, but a powerful 20-8 run in the final eight minutes of the half propelled Colgate forward to give them a 45-26 lead at halftime.
The first five minutes of the second half was pretty even with both teams picking up important rebounds and making some tough baskets but by the 15-minute mark, Air Force had cut the scoring margin down from 19 points to 13. The Falcons continued to find their rhythm, and despite trailing Colgate throughout most of the half, they were eventually able to find a final surge to tie the game at 72-72 with just 20 seconds left and force the game into the Raiders' third overtime game of the season.
Colgate jumped off to an early lead in overtime, getting on the board first. However, it was Air Force that was able to make some critical plays in the final minutes of the period to secure an 80-75 win.
"It was a tale of two halves," stated head coach
Pamela Bass. "We need to learn from today and make adjustments. If we learn consistency in all that we do, then we will be a formidable threat in the Patriot League. We need to consistently win the battle of the boards."
The Raiders had a 46.6 field goal percentage going 11-23 in the first half and 27-58 in the second. The team also shot 68.2 percent from the charity stripe, with a 90.9 percentage in the first half, and was 6-15 from the arch, five of which were made in the first 20 minutes of play.
Colgate will resume play at home this weekend when it hosts Army in its first Patriot League game of the season. The game, which will be televised on Time Warner Cable, is scheduled to take place on Friday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. on Cotterell Court.
